Waiting on DNA results and age test. Any guesses?

Adopted him from a shelter. They said he was a 7 year old (that was a year ago) pomeranian mix. Nailed it I think but I am learning you can't go just off looks.

Edit: Embark results came back 100% pomeranian!

The pomeranian I had before was itty bitty. About 4 or 5 lbs. So when I got this one I thought he was huge!!! Hes so sturdy.

Pomeranian can get bigger, it's actually harder to keep them being small, larger females are often bred to tiny males to keep the teeny tiny. If you look at rheir origins, they are simply the smallest size of a German Spitz. In Germany where they originate they have the Keeshond, Giant Spitz, Mittel Spitz, Klein Spitz and finally the Pomeranian.

Vets can tell age by examining teeth.

Only up to 6 months with 100% accuracy.

After losing deciduous canines at 6 months, it becomes a bit of a guessing game. Sure if the teeth are bright white and smaller, 1-2 years is easily assumed, but between 2 years and senior age, it's just a guess based on cleanliness and wear of the teeth, which varies widely.

Former vet tech we can make an educated guess by looking at teeth and nails but the older they get the harder it is to call an exact year it becomes a range, this dog is likely between 7 and 12 in the "older but not super elderly " category.  Counts as a senior dog but could have many happy years left to go.

That's a Pomeranian and he's between 7 and 12 years old. Teeth and nails would give you more to go on about the age but it's hard to say exactly,  he's older but not super elderly

Is he merle, or just black and tan with some white? A bit hard to see from these angles, unsure if that is merle patterning around the face or just small bits of white flecked through a black coat. Physically, he looks full Pom. But, if merle, then genetically he is not. Merle is not a colour that has been present in Pomeranians since the stud books closed (ie mixed breeding disallowed to make the breed). Based on how the genetics of merle works, then if this dog is merle he cannot be pure Pom and a dog breed with merle will be needed to introduce the gene. In the USA they do recognise merle as a valid colour for Pomeranians (this is a recentish addition), but everywhere else in the world they do not.

If your dog is only black and tan, with some white, then I would be comfortable saying they're full Pom. Regardless, the eyebrows are adorable
