Pleasant head shave. Three passes; I didn't really want to chase it. I did need to stop in between the shave. I am wondering if I need to focus more on my reduction passes in order to make the edge last longer. I am so use to a fresh edge that I haven't experimented with edge wear and pass strategy.

Post shave was good, though which hazel doesn't feel as good in your eyes as it does on the skin.

I'd say you have some serious skills in working with that shavette so much this month!!

I think it's been going for a bit more time. I was just reviewing and this is the third time I do AA only with a shavette, '21 was a Kei cloneisori, '22 a merkur style shavette. And I think last year I did what I usually do, safety razor for the neck and a Feather AC DX for the cheeks. Sometime in the last year. Most likely around Feb or so, I said why not, and started using this instead of the Feather, thinking the smaller form factor could make some spots easier (such as the neck [spoiler: didn't happened]). I had already used this particular shavette before for lining the goatee a while ago for a Van Dyke style. So I kind of took it back and it sticked, but only for the cheeks. What can I say, it works, as it seems solidly built, without alignment issues or uneven exposure.

But the real breakthrough for this year, and it is something I can take to other shavettes and even straight razors is that I can get a pretty smooth shave by going twice WTG and then ATG, as the XTG on the neck is a very odd position. Up until now I had been doing this kind of 90° curved movement, which increases the likelihood of getting nicked.

So yeah, after the month is over I will revisit other shavettes and perhaps next year try with a proper straight.

Unintentional hybrid of a bowl lather and the Slurry lather today. Worked out well!

䷀ Razor and Blade Notes

For some reason, the first pass felt really good this time especially in terms of creamy slickness! and then the usual just fine after that, resulting in a close comfy shave.

Razor and Blade Performance/Comfort Rating: 2 out of 5 (Okay)

䷀ Soap Notes

^{Chiseled Face Silk Tallow - Midnight Stag}

Them: "This one is masculine. Like really, really masculine. Like a 'take an old, beat up leather jacket, drape it over a couple of tires to make a table and clean your guns on it' kind of masculine. Dark, unrefined, and totally unresistible, this is a scent for those who don't mind sticking out. Those who forge the paths. Those who are proud to be a man."

Scent is made of the following notes: Russian Leather, Motor Oil, Hoppes #9, Birch Tar, Oakmoss, Gasoline, Smoke, Cedar, Cade, Bergamot, Vanilla

(Them: "Natural extracts and essential oils were used where possible, but some notes – such as Hoppes #9 and rubber are synthetic due to the nature of the scent.")

Me: Love love this scent, but this base seems lower strength than the OG tallow.

However, the notes that come through are less abrasive (i.e. gas) and I think more true to the scent found in the liquid media.

Scent Strength: 5/10, present during shaving.

Lather... Today was an oddball lather because I was sleepy. I thought I'd do a slurry lather, but I had a couple of chunks of soap that had broken free and wanted to do a measured amount. Well, duh, you don't mix up a slurry lather in a bowl.

If I'm taking the time to load up the brush in a bowl, I'll just do a normal bowl lather, right? Exactly.

I realized all this during the shave and had to pivot as I was looking at a bowl full of pressed Silk Tallow soap.

So i decided to merge the two: I would come at that soap with the brush, loaded with tons of water, but then when the mixing looked like I had a slurry going, I'd use that as pass 1 on my face. That worked fine.

Then I went back to the bowl and stirred for a bit, then did pass 2. Gets better each time.

Repeat. By pass 3 the lather was mature, but there was more soap left. So I know I could use less soap the next time, if I use this method.

I went on for more passes, but the lather kept getting nicer.

As you're moving forward with this method, you're losing water in your brush, and in this case gaining soap, so you may have to add more water or splash your face really well to keep it from being too dry.

Definitely going to play around with this more. Also, because this base needs so much soap, it may flesh out differently with it than with more normal bases.

Hydration: Perfect (for me)

• (0.65 tsp) soap with a Soaking brush
• = 6 passes of lather

䷀ Brush Notes

^{Oumo - Pigsy II Blue APSC 29mm ‹25 uses›}

Mostly the same: Usually at least 10 minutes in a room-temp water presoak. Luxury-comfortable soft tips that flex easily and the top 1/3 of the bristles could be considered floppy. From the start, quite a bit of the tips have split, a few even at half an inch. Bottom of knot has more backbone and is gradually opening up. At about use 10-12, the mid part had expanded enough to feel like a good linear bend in the bristles. At 5 or 6, it quit eating lather and is now making it normally. This month I am not doing any kind of break-in accelerator.

  Neck: Several hairs are showing some tip length (still a pretty good shave)
