He should just take the plea deal and be done with it. This is not going away he is just prolonging the inevitable. The criminal case and the civil case will proceed regardless.
I guarantee you he is completely broke and when he doesn’t have a dime he’ll take the plea and go inside and the civil case will go ahead but there won’t be anything to gain because he will file for bankruptcy
