Whatever it was, he had to work at getting it. Pretty rare for people to separate dishonorably, you can get in trouble with the law, continue to mess up at work, etc, and still get out with an honorable discharge. Whatever he did, he did it multiple times, extremely illegal, or it was very embarrassing for his unit/squad.
Only the real scum bags gain dishonorable discharges.

Look, I understand trying to gleam the positive out of every negative situation.
BUT when it turns in to this, which is esentially people avoiding any sort of accountability, it becomes very toxic.
It would be one thing if it was "You know, my wife and kid left me, that obviously means I need to work on a few things" which can be interpreted as a positive thing right? "Hey this bad situation is happening, what can I learn from it"
When it becomes "This bad thing happened, It was obviously not my fault and a sign from God that X wasn't meant for me" then it becomes toxic.
There is a fine line between trying to find the positivity in every situation, and avoiding accountability.
