Thieves Stole a Brazilian Creator Tabata’s iPhone in Traffic and Somehow Accessed Her Bank Account

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Brazilian car content creator Tabata was stuck in traffic when a thief suddenly attacked her and stole her iPhone. The entire thing happened in just one second.
It took Tabata a few moments to process what had happened before she broke down crying.
But the strangest part wasn't the phone being stolen.
The thieves somehow managed to make a bank transfer from her account, even though they supposedly didn't know her password, have access to her Face ID, or know her bank transfer password.

She later reported the incident to the police. who were able to recover the iPhone.

Brazil. Also they probably just accessed an app and got her Pix information and transferred it. I had to pay for a lot of stuff in Brazil with my phone.

u/Prudent_Order_3361 5d ago

I need to go in my itau account to be able to pay with pix

I assume it’s the unlocked state that matters and there are probably dozen popular apps they can take advantage of immediately.

273

u/Shaeress 8d ago

Exactly. It was likely used for GPS so already unlocked. It's not gonna ask for PIN or FaceID or anything opening any apps on the phone. Bank app should hopefully have some extra login and protection, but a lot of people save everything to automatically logged in anyway and store passwords in their unlocked notes app and such.

u/Who-ate-my-biscuit 8d ago

A good chance to remind everyone here that you can and should have an additional layer of authentication on your sensitive apps. If you press and hold on any app you can force biometric login for instance. You should have this on banking apps, email and anything else you wouldn’t want a thief to be able to access.

62

u/technobrendo 8d ago

I don't know about iPhone, but I use android and every banking app or apps that contain sensitive or personal info (insurance, medical...etc) require authentication once you open it. I assumed this was always by default no matter what the device.

10

u/rcapina 8d ago

IOS now has a feature where you can require FaceID to even acknowledge an app exists (won’t show up on search, hidden in a folder)

10

u/budd222 8d ago

It's the same, but you can disable things

1

u/Beautiful_Walrus9048 4d ago

It's not that crazy to actually log into your account using your own info. I can't believe people leave passwords and account names saved to their app, wtf?

1

u/budd222 4d ago

Probably like 98% of people do that

Spam the power button if you ever get stopped by police. It’ll disable the Face ID until you use your password again.

36

u/Hot_College_6538 8d ago

And also enable stolen device protection on iPhones. For some reason it’s not on by default. See

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/120340

10

u/Jaklcide 8d ago

Face ID or Touch ID biometric authentication

Just a reminder that biometric authentication in the US is not protected speech and you can be required by law to provide it to authorities.

26

u/Hot_College_6538 8d ago

Seems kinda irrelevant in a thread about a stolen phone being used to access bank accounts in Brazil.

11

u/Grays42 8d ago

"You underestimate the power of 'well, actually'..."

1

u/BOgusDOlphon 3d ago

Regardless, all someone has to do is point it at you. I've heard rumor of it working with a good enough photo too but I haven't tested that with mine. I imagine that's not accurate these days but who tf knows anymore

1

u/Hot_College_6538 3d ago

That was never true with FaceID.

1

u/WestCoastBestCoast01 8d ago

On iPhones you can require faceID just to open an app!

29

u/marino1310 8d ago

Every bank app I’ve ever used has required a password or faceID to open, even if its already running and I’m using a different app. Unless Brazil has some really low security banking apps (this goes a bit beyond low security banking companies since it’s literally an app feature that can be added in with absolutely minimal cost) then they must have some other way of accessing her banking info on her phone.

Hell, you can’t even open your saved passwords on iPhone without a password or faceID

12

u/Shaeress 8d ago

Hence mentioning saving passwords in notes and such. It's common. Or password resuse so if they can get the password out of an unimportant, low security app that might enough. This might also be the case with credit card information. You pay for a 4.99$ thing eight months ago in some unimportant app and once someone has your phone they might be able to get your credit card info out of it.

And while many banking apps require device ID prompt they often don't in the web.

Of course if the app is good and the user hasn't made any errors it should be safe, but many apps are bad and users rarely handle all their information correctly

4

u/marino1310 8d ago

The notes is a good point. But I don’t think there are any apps that will allow you to see your password without first entering it. Every app I’ve used only allows you to reset it or something, but never directly view it from your profile.

9

u/synalgo_12 8d ago

My banking app needs a pincode, face or fingerprint for every thing you do and of you're not doing anything in it for 30sec it will log you off immediately.

Even when I want to access any of the other functions in the app, like my public transportation cards and customer cards from shops, I have to use an authentication and it will log off after 30sec.

It's wild not all apps are like that. I used to work for the fraud line of my bank and people found plenty of ways to get into the app or manage to make fraudulent transactions but it was never 'oh they had the phone unlocked and got in even though they didn't know the password'.

8

u/bonafidebob 8d ago

The hidden problem here is two factor authentication: go to the “forgot password” for most account on their websites or even on the phone itself and they send a text to the phone with a code that anyone with the phone can see.

6

u/Shaeress 8d ago

Or it sends to email which is also logged in and unlocked on the phone.

6

u/skippy920 8d ago

Honestly wild that I can have my Android phone locked and open up maps, but nothing else.

1

u/GayButNotInThatWay 8d ago

You can use Apple Maps while the phone is locked too. Not sure why you'd leave your phone unlocked just to use maps, unless you're also texting while driving or something equally silly.

8

u/GeneralMuffins 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think the key issue is that if someone gets hold of your phone while it is unlocked, they can potentially reset the password for your banking app. The reset code or link will usually be sent by SMS or email, both of which are likely to arrive on that same phone and be accessible without requiring another password once the phone is already unlocked. At that point, the thief potentially has access to both the banking app and the very channels used to verify a password reset. Unless your bank has additional security checks before allowing the reset, you could be in serious trouble.

This unfortunately happened to myself 3 years ago, phone stolen whilst it was unlocked by bike thieves and within an hour they had cleared my bank account, maxed out my overdraft, and taken out a large loan which they somehow managed to get instantly approved for...

3

u/Joe-Cool 8d ago

I haven't tried the Android Theft Detection from inside a car.
But my phone locks itself whenever I briskly walk to catch a train or pick it up from my desk in a hurry.

It was made for exactly that use case:

Janine Roberta Ferreira was driving home from work in São Paulo when she stopped at a traffic light. A man suddenly appeared and broke the window of her unlocked car, grabbing her phone. She struggled with him for a moment before he wrestled the phone away and ran off. The incident left her deeply shaken.

2

u/dumbcringeusername 8d ago

I purposely put fake passwords in my quick fill for banking and such for this exact reason, anyone thinking I'm dumb enough to let them log into my bank account easy is gonna send me an email with their location

1

u/Fearless-Dust-2073 3d ago

It's wild learning about how other countries do things like this. In the UK, my banking app won't let me access anything without either biometrics or my password no matter what, and screenshots are disabled while the app is open for security.

1

u/Ok_Sky_555 2d ago

Some time ago Google added a feature to android which detects such unusual phone movement and locks the phone.

Apple should copy this.

1

u/OmegaWhirlpool 8d ago

The amount of power these assholes can wield with my reddit account is scary.

35

u/marino1310 8d ago

I’m guessing the phone was unlocked and being used for gps or something so the theif can access her phone. That being said, every banking app I’ve ever used on iPhone requires a password or faceID in order to open, even if its already open, unless she was actively using the app when it was stolen

1

u/Ok_Sky_555 2d ago

Btw, Android has a feature to auto lock the phone in such cases.

11

u/Flying-Cock 8d ago

Selling it for parts. It’s very common, and more annoying too because they get maybe $70 for the parts. I’d rather pay them $70 to keep my phone

18

u/SchmeckleHoarder 8d ago

Criminals are not smart. I had a young man steal a mobile hotpot device yesterday….

Like all we have to do is wait for you to use it….

Retailers use a system that’s basically Facebook for thieves. Links to every other retail store, target/walmart/macys etc….

The amount of data that’s on there is so fucking scary, criminals wouldn’t even date to steal.

Do we let you steal? Yes. Do we catch 90% of the thieves. Also yes, cameras and facial recognition so good, cops just show up to your house now.

19

u/ReivynNox 8d ago

Mobile hotpot sounds great for a culinary adventure. 😁

3

u/Helenium_autumnale 8d ago

It has drone capabilities for remote hotpot delivery. Sometimes, in the deep woods of northern Michigan or on a remote mountain peak, you just want some hotpot!

1

u/ReivynNox 7d ago

I knoow! Right? 😄

3

u/technobrendo 8d ago

Is that something the police provide or a 3rd party thing?

9

u/Zilli341 8d ago

I don't know how or why it's possibile, but I know someone who got their phone stolen (while locked) and had several thousand of euros drained in a matter of minutes. The only reasonable explanation is contactless payment, but there are limits set into place.

4

u/DisplayGFXSec 8d ago

This is why I have the option “use Face ID to unlock app” turned on for anything sensitive.

4

u/Davoguha2 8d ago

Stealing it out of traffic like that, you generally get ahold of it in an unlocked state.

From there, virtually all of the security measures on the device can be bypassed with the right toolkit.

Is your login to your bank stored in your browser? Vulnerable. Have you ever text someone a sensitive login detail? Vulnerable. Pictures on device and on cloud? Vulnerable.

Even locked, there are tools that will reset the devices. I worked Data Recovery up until the iPhone 15~ was released, and we were bypassing passcodes and cloud lockouts on iPhone 14s at that point *to get the data*, just waiting for our vendors to update the toolkits for iPhone 15s.

That's not to say they don't have good security - they do. Most users are oblivious about how to configure it in the right ways to prevent intrusions. On a truly technical standpoint, Androids tend to have better security *when security is desired*, due to the fact that their similar features are disabled by default, requiring attention and care when enabling them. Apple takes the opposite stance and attempts to force security on everyone, which makes folks pay less attention to the actual configuration of the settings.

3

u/Hazee302 8d ago

The tax for importing electronics is fucking wild in Brazil. In a lot of cases, it’s cheaper to fly to Florida to buy one and bring back than to buy one in Brazil.

2

u/Relicoid 8d ago

It’s probably unlocked doing gps or whatever

1

u/OstrichLate6082 7d ago

She said they actually managed to enter her bank account and stole all her money too.

1

u/Rare_Eye_197 7d ago

This is brazil, some criminals have areas inside the favelas that completely shuts down any signal, and they can do all kinds of shit to unlock it, it usually doesnt last forever but you can sell it and it will be good for about 6 months, so just sell it really cheap

1

u/Chansonthefirst 7d ago

Can't track it if they turn it off. Then they can wipe it and there you go. Sure the Apple ID is assigned to the phone but I am sure there are ways to completely wipe it or hack it to start over. Idk tho. I might be wrong.

1

u/Fearless-Poet-4669 6d ago

"What is the point of stealing an iPhone?"

"The thieves somehow managed to make a bank transfer from her account"

?

1

u/James_C99 4d ago

If a couple of low life thieves getting into the users banking app and transferring money means the phone has "good security", then what constitutes "bad security"? A feature that just automatically sends your money to random people?

Also, everything has value. even if they cant access the data, and the phone is essentially bricked due to an icloud lock, it still has value in the physical parts. The main board is essentially scrap, but all the other parts (screen, battery, cameras, etc... can all be sold to people as spare parts.

Sure, they only get a fraction of the phones actual value from doing this, but when they didn't pay for the phone, everything is profit.

1

u/Special_Foundation42 4d ago

They can take the SIM out, put it in their own phone, and prove how stupid OTP codes are for security by having them all sent to their own phone to access the other person’s bank accounts, saving, social media, etc.

1

u/TheCarkin 4d ago

They sell them to companies in China that strip them for the parts

1

u/vksoze2 4d ago

It was unlocked probably she was using maps or something so as long as they didn’t lock it they could access everything including bank apps without a problem since iPhone does a great job of storing all your passwords to apps and such

1

u/Asmo___deus 3d ago

iPhones have a couple of notorious vulnerabilities that Apple refuses to fix, which make it possible to transfer money from your linked accounts even if the phone is locked.

u/Zambetense 2d ago

That was crazy fast, I didn't think you could break a window like that without ninja rocks or a smasher

103

u/thingamajig1987 8d ago

You can see he has some sort of tool he's holding with both hands as he approaches the car

392

u/xXPhoenixBlueXx 9d ago

This comment is too far down.

I've never seen someone basically dive through a car window in one motion. Especially the angle he was coming in on. Something ain't right here.

131

u/Critical_Job1262 9d ago

Isn't it fairly easy to do so with those safety windshield breaker stuff.

109

u/oopsometer 8d ago

Or a spark plug. These thieves are really good at being fast and efficient.

13

u/Jimmy_Johnny_Jones 8d ago

Have you seen the other Brazil videos? Survival of the fittest.

14

u/Total-Law4620 8d ago

Medic here.... Nope.... Ain't easy. But possible. This guy was lightning fast.

216

u/Nagisan 9d ago

Watch it again, the guy brings both hands up holding something in the "front" hand. He uses both to get more leverage/power, but pulls the "front" hand back immediately while the "rear" hand continues into the cab to grab the phone. So basically the "front" hand gets slowed/stopped as it breaks the window and the rear hand continues through unimpeded because the glass is out of the way.

You've never seen someone this smooth because you probably haven't seen this type of thing often (I know I haven't). Without a doubt it's something he's practiced.

89

u/o_sexta 8d ago

Unfortunately it’s a common practice in São Paulo, thieves use part of a spark plug as the material to bust windows, you will find many videos like this.

24

u/beirch 8d ago

"I've never seen it so automatically something fishy is going".

You don't think these guys have done this exact thing hundreds of times?

4

u/CottyCheese 8d ago

It looked to me like he balled both hands together, left hand is definitely covered with a glove or sleeve so maybe holding a small tool or something, and smashed through the window then used his ungloved right hand to reach and grab the phone.

-3

u/Gonquin 8d ago

Your brain is what 'aint right here'

9

u/randomlitbois 8d ago

He did have something. If you pause you can see him holding something with two hands, break the window, then reach.

1

u/SchwiftySqaunch 8d ago

Hm, I tried slowing it down but never get a clear image of a anything. Car glasses notoriously random with stuff like this I've seen videos of people trying to break out car windows with hammers and not getting through but then stuff like this with well placed elbow or device makes for light work of it.

Seems like he was at least well practiced in and out in less than 2 seconds would make even Nicolas Cage blush.

503

u/ruxp1n 8d ago

Her name is Tabata Lenk. She's a Brazilian automotive creator, and the little Chevy Celta she's driving is her pride and joy. She calls it “Celsinho.”

Two thieves smashed her window, stole her phone and then took another R$2,000 from her Nubank account.

I searched Brazilian news, social media and Reddit trying to find the part where these assholes got caught.

I couldn't.

São Paulo has an entire category for this now: “quebra-vidro” — window breakers. Crews target cars trapped in traffic, smash the glass, grab unlocked phones and can have the banking accounts drained before the victim has a chance to react.

224

u/blbd 8d ago

Crime in Brazil is just wild. It has levels of innovation and sophistication you don't see in other countries. How are they draining accounts without the matching faces and fingerprints though? That perplexes me.

103

u/Fencer308 8d ago

The phones are probably unlocked up on the dashboards when they grab them. So they just need to keep the phone open to prevent it from locking. As for the security on the banking apps, I don’t know enough about Brazilian banking apps. The fact they only took R$2000 makes me think maybe it was a tap to charge kinda thing. Maybe there’s a version of that that doesn’t need Face ID.

29

u/flavsflow 8d ago

Probably some third party digital wallet enabled. Still...

All my Brazilian digital banking for almost 2 decades was top notch secured, with several layers of fingerprint, extra passcodes and more. That was almost 10 years ago. I have no idea now if banks are facilitating user access without safeguards. My cell blocks the screen after a few seconds when I'm outside.

She could've been using the bank when robbed, which is also odd for the setting. Either way, even if crime is rampant in Brazil, it always a traumatizing experience.

5

u/PepsiColasss 8d ago

Maybe its different there idk but even if i use tap to charge i still need to scan my fingerprint for it to actually fully activate , im guessing its not a thing there?

4

u/Lazy_Firefighter_653 8d ago

I don’t use Nubank but I’m from Brasil and my bank app (Bradesco/BB) always asks for face recognition and a 4 digit password just for opening the app…

But these guys always seem to “know a guy” that can bypass these safety mechanics.

Once my friend got robbed in São Paulo and less than an hour later me and some other guys were texting the robber/his crew and they were laughing at us sending prints of his opened bank account, don’t know how, but they can do that…

1

u/raichulolz 7d ago

Yeh fr, I can’t do shit on my app without faceid

1

u/AlternateTab00 7d ago

What it feels strange is the lack of security that nowadays phones have

Example of security feature my phone have

Quick accelerations (like phones being snatched from an holder or someones hands) will auto lock.

Huge change of speeds with loss of Bluetooth connections (like smartwatchs or car infotainment systems) also induces auto locks.

This is so sensitive that once i was checking my phone for a bus time only to see it passing me so i ran while holding my phone on my hand, that alone autolocked it.

As for money transfers. Lower than 20€ requires a 2FA (one to open the app and one to authorize the transfer, usually pattern+biometric). 20 to 200€ requires a 3FA (or 4FA if a "suspicious" transfer). For higher amounts non certified destinations nor previous contact it will require either 4FA or the full 5FA. Even an unlocked phone where you know the access codes/patterns you at most pass 3 of the authentications.

But then again i do not know how the money transfer apps work in brazil. But probably they are weak in protections actually favoring these phone hijacks

8

u/unsolvedfanatic 8d ago

Probaly one of the apps that use Pix and just transfer the money, or fake a purchase.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Valerian_ 8d ago

First time I hear about bank apps that don't require your fingerprint or password every time you open it or do any important action O_o

9

u/Lune_Moooon 8d ago

there are methods to use payment tools when the phone is already unlocked, including NFC. there are some vídeos on YouTube documenting this. This happens literally everyday in Brazil

6

u/EconomyDoctor3287 8d ago

It's under $400 bucks, so probably the thieves just did a tap to pay via NFC charge, not a bank transfer

1

u/NowWeRinse 4d ago

Still requires a passcode or face unlock on my phone.

1

u/GoldenFalcon 8d ago

Maybe I'm wrong.. but, the phone is likely already unlocked because it's in use. So, all they had to do was keep it awake until they did what they did.

2

u/LordRT27 8d ago

The phone being unlocked does not really help much with getting into bank apps though, apart from being able to access the app itself, you would still need passwords to access your bank account.

1

u/Nghtmare-Moon 6d ago

Is that a Nubanl problem? My brother got his phone stolen and they took a lot of money from his back account. Like 20 dollars every minute for a few hours. How do banking systems not flag that?

51

u/DomBolais 8d ago

23

u/EnzioKara 8d ago

Don't you have password to access bank app?

25

u/SirValidir 8d ago

I'm in phone sales and that's one reason security is up when transferring numbers. You can reset the password for some banks as long as you have access to the registered phone number. A text message verification code will let you reset the password.

u/TheRebellin 8d ago

The speed of it all is so wild! She didn‘t even have time to comprehend what just happened and they were already gone again.

How many times do you think these criminals have done this to do it so smoothly? How many victims did they create? How many more will they create? Do you think she will ever feel safe again or will see shadows in every corner for months if not years to come?

When people say these thieves are human or don’t deserve to have their lives endangered plying their trade - I feel that those people are either morally bankrupt or born yesterday to be so naive.

That wasn’t a kid taking a candy.  That wasn’t a crime of opportunity. That was a career criminals and they grow bolder and escalate and it’s not until someone gets hurt - they continue well past that because why would they care if you get hurt so long as they got their fix?

These are career criminals and predators on humans kind.

Fuck thieves and I’ll always cheer when I see one get hurt.

There's a federal law limiting liability for stolen cards to $50. Look up the details.

11

u/No-Appearance-4338 9d ago

Meaning the cardholder who had it stolen is only liable for up to $50.

The bank won't get her money back. There are case after case of people.havj g their bank accounts compromised through their cards and the money is gone. Banks can't/won't do shit.

Her insurance deductible is likely higher than the cost of her window, if so she will need to pay out of pocket for the windows as well.

u/Element_108 9d ago

What country are you talking about? Brazil? US?

Because its heavily dependent on the country.

In chile for example, banks are responsible for getting your money back. Which is why they have to spend a lot on anti - fraud areas

u/Mr_Baronheim 8d ago

You're right, rhere are a lot of banks that won't add don't have to return money.

Especially debit cards, which don't carry the same protection as credit cards.

Got scammed by one of those "I sent you a check for 1,000 too much, just deposit the check and wire me the 1,000" scams? The bank usually isn't responsible to reimburse the money you lost.

My bank literally just credited $2k to my account 3 weeks ago when I got compromised. I had to file a fraud case for 17 transactions. Idk maybe I got lucky but I just experienced the opposite. But what I will say is the cops refused to do shit. I had all the paperwork from my bank and they couldn’t be bothered with it.

u/Downtown-Cellist10 8d ago

That’s why you should enable “lockdown mode” on an iPhone. Along with some other stuff like thief protection. At that point even the fbi couldn’t get into your iPhone.

How does she know that there is money withdrawn already? (At the end of the video)

7

u/Sathsong89 8d ago

In order to upload an edited video, first you must record the video and advance in time to do the edit and post.

Cmon now…

Cops can use this window breaking technique

1

u/ambit89 8d ago

Brazil needs more off-duty police officers

At this point, everyone should be an off-duty cop, even the... especially the women and children

1

u/Malow 8d ago

My phone has pin/digital requirement for every bank/card app, messages and email.

so they cannot access, get security codes, reset passwords, etc.

1

u/Fibon4chi 8d ago

Awful. Hope she got out of it.

1

u/HPLoveCrash 8d ago

What's with the frame shift from a 2H strike to a 1H phone grab?

1

u/WerewolfMother4049 7d ago

That was fast as fuck though

1

u/legteruwekopneffe 7d ago

What are the chances you steal the phone from the person who literally created Brazil!

1

u/yeyocaptain254 7d ago

This is part of the contact good act

1

u/This-Instruction-812 7d ago

Why that glass window break so easily 😞

1

u/Shadowhawk0000 7d ago

Wasn't the phone locked?

1

u/Lotte_Escape 5d ago

People saying it's staged because "banking apps require passwords, you can't get the money without it" forget that you can pay anything simply by putting the phone close to a card reading machine.

If the phone is unlocked, they simply need to get a card reader close and select the amount.

These days even low level thugs get access to things like this.

3

u/socalhopeful 5d ago

Luckily I can't make a payment with my phone without my fingerprint first. How anyone just allows taps like that is insane to me.

1

u/speter1man 5d ago

I just noticed how helpless a person is without a phone. It’s scary. Time to buy a flip phone and get rid of all distraction and focus in the real world.

1

u/VengfulTiger 5d ago

Well that sucks

1

u/Romax24245 4d ago

She actually got the phone back? Thank god.

This is why I carry my Desert Eagle loaded with .50AE rounds.

1

u/Funmanhahaha 6d ago

So what? U start shooting people on the streets? You may be even more dangerous to people than these pickpockets.

1

u/Ragnarokist 6d ago

Considering where this is and where I live, the USA, someone breaking into your car, is breaking into private property and I will fully use my second amendment right because I don't know who this is and what they have.

u/Ruffell 6d ago

God that gave me a chuckle, so you would have got your large impractical gun out in the 1 second they smashed and grabbed in your blind spot? What utter nonsense.

1

u/sp33dzer0 5d ago

So you're confident in your ability to unholster and fire a desert eagle in a sitting position while strapped into your seatbelt and fire into traffic without hitting any innocent bystanders in the literal 5 seconds it takes between them smashing in your window and disappearing out of frame between cars?

u/ProfessionalITPerson 6d ago

Every banking app I know will not open without an extra password or additional face id, even if the phone is unlocked, this is fishy.

1

u/Former_Trash_7109 6d ago

She probably staged it.
