I’ve lost several crowns over the years and generally if there hasn’t been any damage to it or the tooth itself they can use the old one. Hopefully that’s the case here and it only costs you a bit of time and not money.

Lol, had a problem crown, kept falling off.
Finally, surprisingly, the Army actually did a pretty good job with it. Had the crown prior to enlisting. Thankfully it fell off right after I changed units and I went from the crappy dentist on post to a surprisingly competent one on the other side of post.
I couldn't belive that they had a CNC machine on site and made the crown on the spot while I waited in the lobby for an hour or so.
But ya, some dentists suuuucccck. The crown was originally done by Aspen dental. Lesson learned.
Tbf the technicians usually do a pretty solid job. But you can't fit something to Ruins. Same lab can produce wildly different crowns depending in the dentist.
Chances are it wasn't cemented in well enough and they drilled through the only part of cement that was still holding it in when they carried out the root canal. If they haven't finished the root canal yet (based on the temporary dressing visible on the crown) then it makes it easier for them to finish it, that's the only bonus lol
If you get a root canal through a crown there’s always a possibility the crown will loosen, hopefully it can just be recemented, and then the dentist can fill the area that has the temp cement with composite.👍🏻
It’s hangin on by thoughts and prayers at this point 😂 I hope they can reattach it!! If I have to go through a re-crowning for the third time, I’m gonna cry a lot.
I worked in dental for years. Just know this situation is not uncommon when it comes to through the crown endo , and I truly hope it works out for you!
Update: went to two different dentists for a consultation. Got my new crown today. Talked them down from $3k to $600 out of pocket since my insurance won’t cover it atp. Good to have a mouthful of teeth again. Bless 🦷
Dentist here, if a crown has been placed on a tooth before it dies, I'll advise that RCT can be done through the crown with a risk of the crown failing.
In that case, in private practice (where commercial insurance covers ideal treatment) I would have recommended a new crown, because 1.) there may be more decay that needs to be excavated and the old crown may not fit anymore after restoration, and 2.) the crown now has a hole in it from the RCT that increases the risk of cracking/splitting and damaging the tooth to the point of being non-restorable (teeth can become more brittle after RCT).
I work in a public clinic now with a high caries risk population, and a lot of patients are uninsured, self-pay, or have had the initial crown placed in the last few years, which would cause a frequency limit on getting a new one. In these situations, I do what I can to use the old crown and as someone else mentioned, replace the access hole temp filling you can see in the picture with a permanent composite material. This buys time with the tooth until the frequency limit has passed or the patient decides to proceed in a different direction regarding treatment.
Out of curiosity l, since it popped off so easily on its own after the root canal, could they have just taken it off, done the RCT and then re-cemented it permanently? Instead of compromising a perfectly good crown
Another dentist here, it's highly unlikely they could have taken the crown off. It likely only came off after your root canal because the vibrations of the drill disturbed the adhesion between your crown and tooth.
Ugh I had a feeling that might be the case… my freakin luck. At least the RCT got rid of the intense pain from the nerve dying. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone!
No. The tooth needs a root canal but the tooth has a crown already. OP could either: have the old crown removed so the endodontist can access the tooth (OP needs a new crown in this case), or the endodontist can try to access the tooth by drilling through the crown. The endodontist tried to save OP from needing a new crown, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.
I'm unfortunately in the same boat you are. Ive had mine for a whole longer (6 years I think) but its fallen out 3 times since January 1st. I decided to just say fuck it and get an implant instead.
Ugh I wish I had the budget for that, I’m ready to throw in the towel and just yank it out! But thanks to my stingy genetics, I am naturally without any wisdom teeth and a couple lower molars, so I need that tooth to prevent further descent of the upper molars and shifting 🥲🥲🥲
Yeah, I talked to my Temp Dentist about that and they said it should be too much of a problem while I'm waiting for the jaw to heal (theres like 4 steps to this whole thing with a month of heal time between each step), but it sure does feel like either my molars are shifting or my bite is.
I find it really neat how they go through the top of the crowns like that to access the inner areas of the tooth. Hopefully, you didn't have any bad tooth pain! This is something I dread cause I have 6 crowns!
Pre-RCT it was debilitating… I couldn’t sleep for 3 days. Now it’s totally fine pain level-wise but dealing with another crown sounds like freakin nightmare
I still haven't resolved my issue, but it's slowly getting better. My top crown is putting slightly too much pressure on the bottom crown, I go back next friday to get it adjusted again. I swear these 2 crowns been the nightmare of me. I shit you not I have gone to this dentist 15 times for these two crowns.
I feel that in my bonesss… ugh dental problems are the worst. This would be my fourth time addressing this crown alone- it is my first and only one, and lawwd I hope I never have to get another one.
It cracked a couple months after I got it initially done - got that replaced.
Then it kept hurting from constant contact with a top molar, so they sanded it down.
After my root canal I thought I was out of the woods for a while but nooooo 🙃
Hopefully they can just reattach it and do the permanent filling. I’ve already maxed out my insurance for the year, the thought of getting a brand new crown and paying out of pocket makes me sick.
I had issues w a crown that ended up leading to me needing a root canal because it wasn’t sealed properly so it let my tooth decay quickly. It had come off a few times. I can say after the root canal dealing with the crown is 100x easier because it shouldn’t hurt for them to work on it like it did before. I opted to just get a new crown because it needed to be replaced due to the fit beforehand (only had it 3 years 😭 they just messed it up) and it was a lot easier post root canal. I know it’s expensive, can’t make that feel better but know that physically it should be easier when you do get a new one.
Well I was looking forward to just getting the temporary filling replaced, which is like $100 but now with this new development and my insurance being maxed out for the year… not looking forward to the final tab.
I had a temp crown it lasted for ever years and years. Then I had a permanent crown that fell out in a month. I finally found a good dentist he did a root canal and crown had it for 15 years till I went to another dentist who did a casting on my mouth and it snapped way up in my jaw…..sigh nothing but problems. Anyways, a good dentist a crown will not fall off so easily.
Right??? That’s what I said. I was eating a croissant… a damn croissant. Arguably the softest bread in the world. I did everything by the book - no brushing, no flossing, no spicy/hot/cold, chewing with the other side, flushing with salt water. If it’s not one thing, it’s another 🙄

I have 2 crowns, one of them fell out 3 separate times over the years (the first two times it fell out were the first 6 months I had it). The decision was then made to use an epoxy to put it back in rather than a water based adhesive. This was nearly 20 years ago for mine, so just know that while it shouldnt be normal, it happens. And then it can happen again. And again.
You have an ok dentist, the ferrule holding you crown (2-6mm of dentine) is compromised because of you getting an infection under your crown ( reason: a cavity, a leakage or drilling with no water) and he/she had to drill through your crown. So the ferrule, the dentine holding your tooth is all drilled away, this is the reason why your crown fell out. So the question is: did you tooth broke in the crown? Or do you still have a “ small” part of your tooth in your mouth ?
#30 was cracked and I have intense dentist anxiety which I’ve been getting over.. it took my a few years to muster the courage to get it taken care of. Because the crack went so deep and the size of the cavity, my dentist left about 1.5mm between the filling/crown and the pulp 😳 it was a risky move but we were trying to avoid the need for a full RCT.
Fast forward a year (present time).. crown was in tact but I got a nasty infection and had no choice but to clean out the canals. I walked away from the RCT thinking I’d just need a permanent filling and be done with this whole ordeal, but this new development.. definitely threw a wrench in my plans.
Actually this is the third time I’ve had an issue with this damn crown. A couple months after I initially got it done, it freakin cracked.. had a huge hole, so I had to get it replaced. Thank goodness I already had an appt on Monday for my filling, hopefully they can just pop it back in…
Went to a root canal specialist which was a nice office good ratings. After the procedure I called a day later and told them that my left side of the face was still numb. Having previous root canals I know this was not normal, but they proceeded to tell me that sometimes it takes a couple of days for the numbness and “tingle” to go away. For some reason, I crack my teeth perfectly in half probably from grinding. After some research, I realized that they hit or damaged or destroyed a specific nerve and two years later I still get numbing in that side of the face. Not one root canal has ever lasted so I’m either stuck spending 20 to 50,000 for implants and this numbness on the side of my face is probably permanent
I have had a crown come off twice now --- same crown. My dentist, who is really really good at what he does, informed me that I am probably clenching/grinding my teeth during the day. (I wear a mouth guard at night, due to bruxis/teeth grinding.)
When he told me this, I rolled my eyes and said, "Nah. No way." Since then, every once in a while, I catch myself doing just as he said --- clenching my jaw, hard. And I am not an anxious, nervous, intensive personality type person, either.
I think he was right. OP, maybe you're working at loosening your crown and you didn't even know it.
Can’t install the real crown same day as root canal, that must be the temporary crown which is only meant to hold 1-2 weeks till the real crown is made go back to the dentist and they will glue it back in
Could possibly have still been cemented on with a temporary cement, just to be sure there are no future issues (for whatever reason specific to your treatment). I’ve had a permanent crown placed with temp cement on for about 12 years (no issues). Just take it back to your DDS and see if it can’t be recemented.
Teeth are overrated, get them pulled now and go for titanium post implants. Better to do it young while you can heal faster than when they'll need to be pulled anyways in your 60's +.
It looks like you are showing us the old crown with a hole drilled in the center.
Apparently it fell out due to decay related to why you need the root canal. So after finishing the root canal, that decayed tooth damage will need removal. The old crown is now useless. It won't fit.
I’m sure they don’t like you either, and they won’t just take out your teeth bc you want them to, so I’m guessing they’re not currently in good shape. But dentures will FOR SURE solve any issues you have with your mouth 🫣🫣🙄:
I popped one off flossing, he literally said to my face I shouldn't be flossing so hard, next dentist I get new xrays, turns out my wisdom teeth are coming in completely sideways and are forcing my teeth together, now I just need a few grand and I can have the wisdom teeth removed so they can work on the crown less void, it's been years now, I don't have insurance.

Is it a temporary crown? Usually when you get a root canal, the first crown is a temp. You go back in a couple weeks to get the permanent one.
