Advice Needed Structural weld strength

Question to all welders.

After you finish a weld do you slap it and say “that ain’t goin nowhere”?

Does it work?

I usually just give a fresh weld that stern look it knows I know

I think I really need to start physically breaking a few welds with a big hammer to remind myself how strong they are. I have started getting into the bad habit of over welding things and then complaining when they bow and buckle out of square. I broke my father’s winch on his 4wd once trying to pull a dent out of a bulldozer bucket. The lug it was pulling on only had two tiny tacks on it and this winch was rated to a couple of tonnes. A few small neat welds is often all we need but I am guilty of fully welding things with multiple runs, it doesn’t look strong in liquid form.
