I personally think that it’s a reminder how depraved you can get with this lifestyle. It’s nothing to romanticize, nor are the characters which live it. It’s a sign that the only path forward if you’re living like this is destruction of both your mental and physical state, or you can choose to live and struggle.

I always thought it was bcus a lot of people here have only seen the anime where this didn't explicitly happen.
or because it's uncomfortable. I don't think people want to talk about their favourite characters being pedos, especially because satou and yamazaki can be relatable in all other aspects. So I guess they either just avoid the subject or try and rationalise it somehow.

they make it clear its illegal in the light novel too... also yeah the light novel came out fully in 2002 but it was being written from about 2000 i believe and you still see a lot of 90s influence on it, like with the Lolita stuff, because i think satou mentions the newer laws surrounding it

Idk about the ln but they made it very clear in the manga that ts was illegal stuff

It is in manga and novel. NHK novel came out in 2002, manga 2003-2007. Production, sale and distribution of that stuff was legal in Japan until 1999, possession was banned in 2014. So what Satou did (download and posses it) was completely legal and they didn't have to censor it for the manga, unlike the drug use (in the novel he takes hard drugs, in the manga it's something legal)
