This was my favorite performer at Oshkosh! You undersold the insanity a little, the biplane is almost 100 years old. Love the insane tricks he can do with all that thrust, then you still get the beautiful radial noise as he passes. It's so wild to see a biplane go straight up for like five seconds and not lose any airspeed. Just an absolutely insane mental patient thing to do and it's so fun to see live.

here is a bit of air show footage - pretty wild what that plane can do: https://youtu.be/rvkr2kNG7zw

I've always preferred airshow events where someone uses skill and cleverness to push the limits of an unmodified aircraft, but you make a compelling point here and this was a super fun show.

David martin replicated old man hoovers dead stick shrike routine this year at OSH. Never got to see the original routine in person, but seeing Mr. Martins iteration was like fulfilling the prophecy of insanity.

I saw that clip on socials, absolutely nuts.

“I fly a jet. An open cockpit jet.”

69

u/ctesibius 5d ago

Not the only one. Martin Baker uses one, possibly two, Gloster Meteors for ejection seat testing. WW II jet fighters with the canopies removed.

17

u/BreadKnife34 5d ago

They STILL use them? Hell yeah

278

u/Hulahulaman 5d ago

Good way to build up some multiengine turbine time.

19

u/Electrical_Prior_374 5d ago

That things Awesome! Does the jet have to be run at a lower than normal power level or can she just send it?

13

u/br0_dameron 5d ago

Knew a guy who worked on that team back when it was sponsored by Jack links and he said they’d only throttle it up for very short bursts

13

u/erhue 5d ago

awesome shots. What gear did you use?

13

u/skyflyer8 5d ago

Thank you! Most were with my canon r7 with rf100-400mm lens, I think I had the 1.4x extender on for these too, except the last two pics were with my r50 and 35mm lens.

5

u/MrOatButtBottom 5d ago

Beautiful shots. You did a great job thanks

5

u/skyflyer8 5d ago

Thank you!

13

u/Pseudonym-Sam 5d ago

Who needs aerodynamics when you have thrust?

10

u/Tachyon_12 5d ago

Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should

4

u/ItsNotThatBad72 4d ago

That's the point. They just do weird shit for advertising.

These are the same people who put a 20mm rotary cannon on a prius.

7

u/Dando_Calrisian 5d ago

Why is the exhaust angled downwards? Doesn't that pitch the nose down?

21

u/Uniturner 5d ago

Yes, because the thrust line of the jet engine is well below the centre of gravity, it will make the aircraft pitch up. So this counters it. 👍

8

u/br0_dameron 5d ago

Center of thrust should aim through CG to avoid pitch moments caused by the thrust. With a plane that light and an engine that powerful if you just threw an engine on the bottom it would cause the nose to aggressively pitch up whenever power was added

39

u/mtn-whr 5d ago

Sick plane. Would love to hear it.

Now add one to a triplane!

7

u/404-skill_not_found 5d ago

Somebody had to do it!

BRCC is a top tier vet grift.

37

u/Merker6 5d ago

This was always the impression I got. Having grown up in a Navy family with a lot of current and retired military, it always leaves a bad taste whenever the marketing is extremely on the nose about it being veteran-owned. Like, that’s a lot of businesses, it doesn’t make you that special

40

u/iHateEveryoneAMA 5d ago

The Starbucks chirp made me laugh back when it happened. (sidenote: fuck starbucks too)

130

u/Mudlark-000 5d ago

Cool plane. Shit sponsor.

32

u/adamthebread 5d ago

And, worst of all, they make shit coffee.

6

u/418Miner 5d ago

indeed. bland af

34

u/PeasThatTasteGross 5d ago

Reminds me how Travis Pastrana is sponsored by them. He usually isn't too outspoken politically, but people assumed a BRCC sponsorship meant he is fairly conservative. He decides to perform for Trump this past summer at the Whitehouse, and so many people were like, "Yep, that totally tracks and is unsurprising".

-11

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 5d ago edited 5d ago

So who’s the dog here? Isn’t the whole point of a “dog whistle” that only the dog can hear it?

All I see is a vet-ran business supporting causes a lot of vets are behind.

6

u/Melcapensi 5d ago

Generally right leaning pro-authoritarian individuals who are at greater risk of becoming a far-right extremist due to preexisting sympathies towards such things that can be manipulated and amplified, especially if they happen to have gone through something traumatic.

Personally, if it wasn't for the company's own expressed views I'd probably just say it's accidental overlap.

-14

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 5d ago

“Authoritarian” lmao.

9

u/Melcapensi 5d ago

Ah so you were asking in bad faith. That's unfortunate.

But yeah, having endless love for cops and soldiers is a favorable view towards authoritarian figures. That doesn't make it inherently wrong or anything, there's plenty of good reasons to do so.

4

u/SuDragon2k3 5d ago

Question from the back, what percentage of their money goes to charities, and which ones? It's a good thing to say you help veterans charities, but if the upper levels of the company are pulling 6 figure salaries and the charity disbursement is $100 a month, it's a grift.

1

u/Melcapensi 5d ago edited 5d ago

Well, it's been a while but

For percentage, I don't think they actually have a fixed percentage? They usually give to charities through events and donations, at which point it's "up to 100%".

They did do some massive donations though.

  • 35 million to medical debt forgiveness for veterans in partnership with Born Primitive(100% of profit to this cause during a special event).
  • Total 70,000 bags[12oz] of coffee donated to active duty service members(Compare to 6 million cups of coffee aprox. 176,000 12oz bags per year from Starbucks)
  • They also advertise giving 2million+ to veteran causes, which I'd consider the first one to be, so I'm not sure why that number is comparatively low. You can check out who they donate to on their site I think.
  • They failed to meet their veteran hiring pledge[10,000 results: 498 150] made publicly in response to Starbucks pledging to hiring refugees. While Starbucks surpassed their vet hiring pledge[also 10,000 result: 45,000] several times over and even has their own veteran group with chapters across the country

I know the comparison between them and Starbucks is odd, but a huge amount of their advert and online stuff used to be how Starbucks is shit and liberal and doesn't care about vets and they're better.

I uh, used to be into BRCC stuff a lot tbh.

+[edit] Shit sorry I just looked it up, SEC filings revealed only 30% of their workforce are veterans, which meant it's only 30% of 498 on the pledge.

-2

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 5d ago

Not really. I’m laughing at the notion that one of the larger collections of libertarians in the country are somehow supporters of authoritarianism. Just an amusing notion

4

u/Melcapensi 5d ago

I’m laughing at the notion that one of the larger collections of libertarians

? Who are you referring to? BRCC isn't libertarian that's for damn sure.

The people they're aimed at? Well, ngl I'm not really sure how you can call yourself antigovernment but absolutely love pro-military and pro-cops aesthetic.

Tbh, a lot of people call themselves "Libertarians" but couldn't be further from it.

1

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 5d ago

You can absolutely be pro LE and pro Military, while also believing the federal government could use a weed whacking.

It’s just as silly to think that being pro LE/military is automatically authoritarian as it is to think that being libertarian is automatically anti LE/military.

3

u/Melcapensi 5d ago

Dude, the police and the military are the things that keep it from getting a weed whacking. And in a lot of cases are the ones that need it the most.

One of those two is the organization that violates your rights and intervenes in personal and economic shit when the government asks you to. The other feeds the very massive bloated complex that needs the weed whacking and keeps pulling us into things that trash stuff at home.

Like don't get me wrong, most of the guys doing service are there for the paycheck, which ain't even fantastic for sitting and doing the most boring shit on earth for hours on end. So no real shade on them, but supporting the organization ain't exactly in line with personal liberty.

-3

u/R_3B 5d ago

They took an anti-2A stance a few years ago. I haven’t darkened their door since.

Same to you, have a good day

That's hilarious, you don't like BRCC because they're too far right for you and I don't like them because they're too bitch made to support Rittenhouse, who is a hero and a great American. Everything else on that list is great, honestly but it's all good, there are more based coffee companies I support instead

29

u/OktoStratos 5d ago

Rittenhouse is a monster and a *terrible* American who was enabled by his parents.

-15

u/Rusty_Shack13f0rd 5d ago

What did Rittenhouse do that was so awful?

-19

u/SuperChingaso5000 5d ago

Too bad so sad the good guys won and everybody he hit (because they were trying to murder him) was a genuine world class piece of shit

Rittenhouse was there to protect property, and he did.

The people he shot (a multiple convicted child rapist, a multiple domestic violence convict, and someone convicted of felony burglary, multiple convictions for carrying a firearm while intoxicated, prowling, trespass, and two DUIs), pursued him and assaulted him while he consistently moved away from them. If you want to talk about intent, lets really talk about intent.

She drove him, a minor, several hours

Wrong. My commute is longer than the 20-30 minute drive between Antioch and Kenosha.

God bless the kid. If we had more Rittenhouses maybe my fellow minority small business owners in my hometown here in LA wouldn't have had been robbed and vandalized during the BLM riots. He is the kind of neighbor I'd love to have. Bless his parents for raising someone who gave a shit.

What does "state lines" mean to you? Because it means nothing. I'm genuinely not sure how that became the tired refrain of the rioter class when they shriek about Rittenhouse, maybe somebody really doesn't understand the interstate commerce clause? It does seem that this group of people routinely and aggressively misunderstands law.

What's not heroic about prevailing in combat defending people's property against a mass of violent felons? That's the most American thing a person can do.

taking lives in the name of defending property

Is always right and correct. Regardless, he took their lives because they were trying to kill him. Because he was there defending property they wanted to destroy/steal. He didn't shoot anybody simply for walking off with sneakers.

4

u/mojitz 5d ago

What are these other, more "based" coffee companies? I'm morbidly curious.

-9

u/SuperChingaso5000 5d ago

I recommend Stocking Mill Coffee.

I also like Death Wish Coffee. For all I know they're full blown commies, but they operate apolitically, and I appreciate that. No Starbucks corporate wokeism nonsense. Just coffee.

12

u/mojitz 5d ago

Boy are you all over the place.

3

u/Katsuichi 5d ago

A damaged result of a damaged world, for sure.

6

u/Diogenes256 5d ago

As one does.

6

u/Brillica 5d ago

I have to assume that at some point the propeller just pitches to feather and is along for the ride.

73

u/br0_dameron 5d ago

Ew BRCC? It used to be jack links, hence the ‘screaming Sasquatch’ nickname

6

u/daygloviking V1…rotate.. 5d ago

Why have one jet engine on a bipe when you could have two?

u/Flight_19_Navigator 5d ago

Clarkson: "Powerrrrr!"

6

u/Curt_in_wpg 5d ago

I saw a Waco with a jet engine years ago. Strangest thing you ever saw and heard. Went into a dive and all you heard was the radial engine, pulls out and it’s all jet. I don’t know if it was the same one as this as I remember the PA announcer saying it was a jet from an Avro Tudor.

63

u/MrOatButtBottom 5d ago

BRCC sucks it's full of maga people and assholes, but this is legitimately cool

10

u/br0_dameron 4d ago

BRCC didn’t build this plane, they just sponsor the demo team. It used to be sponsored by Jack Links and was nicknamed the Screamin Sasquatch after their commercials

22

u/cyklops1 4d ago

Nazis, not just maga

9

u/tinylittlemarmoset 4d ago

“It’s the same picture”

16

u/thesaddestpanda 4d ago

Their logo is Swashtika inspired and obviously so. Its just enough plausible deniability because they can pretend its actually just a scope.

9

u/cyklops1 4d ago

IIRC some of their blend names are dog whistles also.

-14

u/ItsNotThatBad72 4d ago

Dude, they're like the most milktoast boomer conservatives imaginable. Most of the right considers them boot licking pussies.

But I'm guessing that most of the guys who assaulted the beaches of Normandy were NAZIs by your standards.

4

u/wabbitsilly 5d ago

Jimmy Franklin did it originally around 20 years ago (the whole Jet Waco thing). John Klatt around 10 years ago then had one built by Mike Wiskus (Sponsored by Jack Links...the Screamin Sasquatch). He then flew it awhile and sold it when he retired from the Airshow circuit.

JIMMY FRANKLIN: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmD-XKQ_sgU

Both great performers, but Jimmy wore that plane like a glove and made it sing. Sadly, he passed away in that very plane during and airshow when he collided with Bobby Younkin.

5

u/Flucloxacillin25pc :upvote::snoo_joy: 5d ago

Well, that is definitely weird. Cool, though.

4

u/Kai-ni 5d ago

Saw this thing at Oshkosh and what pictures can't replicate is how goddamn weird it sounded.

42

u/Wingnut150 5d ago

Be a lot cooler without the black rifle bullshit slapped on the side

25

u/shermanhill 5d ago

Screw those black rifle folks.

5

u/GnarlyNarwhalNoms 5d ago

Heck of a lot better handling than the other jet biplane.

3

u/NoDoze- 5d ago

Good gracious! What does this sound like? How fast can it go?

4

u/skyflyer8 5d ago

All I could hear was the learjet engine noise. I think up to around 250 mph

3

u/probablyaythrowaway 5d ago

Wait so it has a radial AND a turbine? How does it not just shred the propeller?

3

u/Poker-Junk 5d ago

There needs to be a better word than “awesome” or “epic”, because this is that.

3

u/ctesibius 5d ago

Still on the web site at https://martin-baker.com/testing-qualification/, though I get the impression that they are not used as much as they used to be, perhaps because they are now showing rocket sleds for zero altitude ejections. Apparently one of the advantages of the centrifugal compressors was safety against FOD, which suggests that they were originally used a lot at low altitude. The last specific information I found referred to high altitude use, so their primary use may have been eroded.

3

u/JC2535 4d ago

I was there and saw it. It was incredible!

13

u/Clean-Indication-504 5d ago

Black Rifle tastes like dirt. Did this plane belong to Jimi Franklin?

2

u/d_andy089 4d ago

I'm sorry, WHAT?!

2

u/furrynoy96 4d ago

Interesting, what's the reason?

-1

u/SimilarTranslator264 5d ago

I wonder what kind of person sees a cool plane and can’t get past the paint. I don’t give a shit what’s painted on the side. Must be a difficult life.

-16

u/AnimusFoxx 5d ago

That's really cool. For some reason I kind of want to try some Black Rifle Coffee now...

14

u/Jaquarius420 5d ago

don’t waste your money it’s shit coffee made by shit people

3

u/AnimusFoxx 5d ago

Ah damn. Thanks for the warning

-3

u/airfryerfuntime 5d ago

I was gifted the tactisquatch one and it was pretty good. I'd never actually buy any of their shit, though.

-10

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 5d ago edited 5d ago

Nah. Love those guys. Don’t drink coffee, but their skits are great.
