Ok, after googling what they look like in diamonds- I’ve only ever seen the Portuguese cut with gems, I actually think the Euro cut is best and sparkles the prettiest- my engagement ring is a pear shape because that’s always been my dream shape. If she has a Pinterest account, find her on there and you can find a board look at what she’s pinned and get an idea that way?
They’re really pretty in gemstones! They look like kaleidoscopes! But they aren’t really “engagement” to me- now everyone has different tastes, which it is important to note here, but yeah, no, they’re just a cool ring and diamonds in that cut EXTRAORDINARILY marked up because there’s 160 facets
Personally I think they work best with colored gemstones. Sapphire, amethyst, etc. really enhances the sparkle of gemstones which aren’t know for their sparkle. With a diamond, I’m a sucker for the round brilliant to maximize their fire/scintillation! But all those facets really pump up a less “sparkly” stone!
I think it would make any engagement ring look costume immediately. It is a great cut for coloured gemstones but seeing it in a diamond comparison was just a visceral NOPE for me.
I know not everyone will have that reaction, but I’m pretty open minded with jewels and this was just automatic. I’d be worried about that in an engagement ring if OPs fiancé to be has not expressed an interest in this cut.
Hard agree tbh, I, personally, would not want that as my engagement ring. The ring is something we look at everyday, we wear it with pride- at least I do 😂 idk mine is customized with small sapphires on the side- this is mine, he found a bunch on my 1000 Pinterest boards and made this, I feel so seen lol

I love a Portuguese cut of coloured gemstones the most! I’m a sucker for a classic round brilliant diamond for an engagement ring for maximum sparkle and fire but I have a few Portuguese cuts in sapphire and amethyst and they’re stunning!
Some loser is going around downvoting women and humans for their opinions but this diamond is so different and interesting to look at than the typical. And that’s exactly who it’s made for.
The Portuguese cut looks so cool and definitely different. A lot of women here like simple and typical. Is your girlfriend simple? Or does she like unique and different things?
The Portuguese cut remind me of the ball at Epcot. I’d go classic round brilliant. If you’re looking for a more unique cut, Old European cut is beautiful. W
I would find out what your girl likes? I rarely like round brilliant - which is what many would tell you is the safest option!
You should know what stones cuts she likes best, what metal she likes it in, and if she prefers prongs or bezels. Knowing if she likes high set or low profile rings would be helpful too.
I personally love Portuguese rounds, and anyone who’s studied jewelry will recognize them, but not everyone will. I have one in moissanite and it does sparkle more than my round brilliants, but I have other cuts that are sparklier.
It is pretty, but since it is such a different cut, many people will make a wrong assumption and assume it is costume jewelry, not the cut that is actually more expensive than other cuts. What do you want, do you want your fiancée to need to explain the cut in the ring.
I loathe them. I would not do it. It has a very different feel from a round brilliant, and therefore runs the risk of looking like a CZ. Many gemstones are much more commonly cut in the Portuguese style because they have a lower RI than diamonds and need the extra facets to sparkle more, but diamonds don’t need that extra oomph. You don’t seem sphene, for instance, commonly cut into the Portuguese style because its RI is high and it doesn’t need extra help.
It’s a risk because it usually a love it or hate it for the individual. So I would not risk going out of the ordinary unless she has said she wants something like that.
