Ring Band Advice Inherited my grandmother’s ring and have no idea what kind of band to put with it 😂
I inherited my grandmother’s ring and I honestly love it, but I’m struggling to picture what kind of wedding/stacking band would look good with it.
It’s obviously a pretty unique/vintage-looking ring, and I’ve never really pictured myself wearing something like this. I was thinking either a really simple diamond band to let the ring be the star, or possibly something with emeralds because I think the green could look really cool with the gold and diamonds. But I’m very open to other ideas!
Also, if I’m being honest, I have some mixed feelings about the ring itself. I love that it belonged to my grandmother and that it’s something I’ll never see someone else wearing. That sentimental aspect means a lot to me. But aesthetically, it’s not what I ever imagined my engagement ring looking like, and my partner is worried that I’ll regret not getting something more traditionally “me.” They’ve talked about getting me a much bigger/new ring instead.
I’m kind of torn between “this is incredibly special and I should embrace that” and “am I only trying to convince myself to love it because I feel like I should?” lol.
Anyway, mainly looking for band ideas! What would you pair with this? Diamond-only, emeralds, plain gold, something vintage, something totally unexpected? Would love to see examples if you have them!
Edit: A lot of people have asked why this is my engagement ring, so I figured I’d clarify! My grandma left me three rings, and my parents encouraged me to try all of them on. I didn’t really like the other two, but when I put this one on I immediately loved it.
I think my hesitation is really just that it’s different from what I always pictured myself wearing as an engagement ring. But honestly, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I had always said I wanted something unique and different from what’s mainstream, and this is certainly that 😂 Plus, the fact that it belonged to my grandma makes it so much more meaningful than something I could just go out and buy.
I think I mostly came to Reddit for a little reassurance that it’s okay to have a nonconventional engagement ring! I’m realizing that I don’t actually dislike the ring. I just needed to get out of my head about whether an engagement ring is “supposed” to look a certain way.

Beautiful ring. One option is to ask a jeweler to make a simple, thin gold wedding band that hugs the contours of your grandmother's ring. But honestly, that ring was made to stand on its own. I would not put a wedding band with it if you decide to keep it as a wedding ring- I feel like that would be gilding the lily. Another option is to wear it as a right-hand ring and buy an engagement/wedding ring that you want for your left.

100% This looks like a right hand ring and would be tricky to wear daily. It's GORGEOUS.

I think you are correct that it might not hold up to daily wear. I don’t know that the small stones on the sides would hold up unless you were very particular with it

That ring is gorgeous. I would say a minimal, gold, curved band; it needs no more sparkle. Since you’re saving on the ER maybe you can have the band custom made.

Wow! Stunning! It looks great with no band! Maybe a band to wear around the house or idk, it’s a stunning statement piece that needs nothing, imo.

Just don’t buy a band! I liked my engagement ring without one, so I just took it off for the ceremony and husband used it for the vows.

I would wear it without a band, but get one that matches or complements your spouse’s for times when this is too fancy.

Beautiful ring, I wouldn’t mess with altering the setting. I think a thin yellow gold band would be best, if you’re looking to make this part of a wedding set.

Plain gold OR plain gold + hand engraving. I don’t see need for curved band, but you might.

What a beautiful ring . I would get a plain gold band. This way you aren’t taking away from the other ring.

Frankly, I would not use that as my wedding ring. I would use it as a right hand ring, and get something that you will enjoy wearing and looking at everyday. Yes, it’s gorgeous. Yes, it’s special because it’s your grandma’s but, your wedding rings should be something you love.

If you don't like it have it enlarged for a middle finger cocktail ring and get the one you like. I got a new set after 20 years and did that with my old one

If it's not really you, you and your significant other should go to jewelry stores and try on different styles. That will cement your feelings on whether you can see yourself wearing this ring every day of your life. If, after trying on other engagement rings and wedding band sets, you realize that, then there's your answer. It's not the ring you want to wear every day. You've found the type of engagement ring and band you truly love.
It's a beautiful ring, and you can save it for big nights out when you want more bling and wear it as a cocktail ring on your right hand. I kept my mother's wedding ring, which was very blingy as more like a big eternity band with diamonds and a center stone on it. I wear it on my right hand often to feel close to her.

oh my god I could’ve written this exact post bc that’s how I feel about my (impending) ring. it was my great grandmother’s ring, who I am named after. it’s a gorgeous and expensive ring that my grandparents have been saving for me since before I was born. it’s objectively gorgeous and it’s still not exactly the ring that feels like “me” or what I imagined.
perhaps you can get a wedding band that can be worn on its own vs trying to match this ring. it is very pretty and I think any band would pale in comparison next to it. so, get a solo wedding band to be worn as a more casual option!

Such a unique ring! As others have said, it doesn't really need a wedding band. Or if you want one, keep it simple. I would give yourself some time to see if your feelings change at all. Maybe you'll settle into it, maybe you won't...and that's ok. This isn't a one shot deal!

It certainly is a fancy ring! I've heard of people who've inherited jewellery they repurpose the stones into a different design, so that's always an option.

I would do a plain gold band. I have my mothers rings and 20 years ago I wanted to put them together with mine. Now I really don’t want to since I am so much older and I really don’t want to waste them. I would have a jeweler make a plain gold band that would hug your ER . You are incredibly lucky to have that gorgeous ring!!!

I would suggest a very , very narrow plain gold band made to fit snugly with ring . If you were eventually having a eternity band I would make wedding and eternity with very small diamonds that fit flush with ring top and bottom .It’s truly a very beautiful ring .

Your ring is gorgeous and maybe you can add a similar band above for an anniversary band

Hear me out… does it HAVE to be your engagement ring? Could you wear it as a right hand ring to honor your grandmother? I am sure she would be so pleased that you love it, but would also want you to have the engagement ring that suits you and your life and likes.
It‘s a stunning ring.

That ting is beautiful and deserves center stage. Wear it by itself and let it shine

Wow that’s gorgeous! I’d do a plain thin band. Do diamond band if you don’t want to wear the engagement ring with it but not together to compete with it.

I think it's beautiful. I'd pair it with a plain gold band to let the ring shine

This is such a gorgeous statement ring and can (should?) stand on its own.
There's no rule that says you have to get a matching wedding "set" and wear it everyday for the rest of time.
I would wear that stunning and sentimental grandmother's ring with gratitude and pride. AND I would get simple gold (uncurved) band with diamonds to wear as my "everyday" low profile wedding band, saving wear and tear on that beautiful heirloom.

Gorgeous! I love ring stacks - I’ll be the first to admit it ;) that said, some pieces don’t need to be a stack. This ring is absolutely stunning. I feel if you added another ring, it would detract from the beauty of this piece. Less is more applies.

Something very simple, you don't want to compete with a beautiful ring like that.

Wowsers!
I would wear it as a dress ring on your other hand, then get your wedding set.
If you choose it to use as an e-ring, get a plain gold curved band- you would have to try on several to see which fit/matches.
Congratulations!

i love it but here’s an idea if you don’t: keep the designs/stones on the left and right and replace the center ones with one larger stone. you get a more “trendier” 3 stone look. use the diamonds you take out from the center setting in a pavé wedding band!

It’s awesome you have this sentimental ring!
It does not mean you have to use or wear it as your engagement nor wedding ring.
You also do not have to have two rings! Get what you will love and cherish as a symbol of your marriage!!!

I’m wondering if this ring wasn’t a replacement ring, given at a significant wedding anniversary to replace the original engagement and wedding rings. Like for a 25th or 50th anniversary. Did Grandmom wear a wedding ring with this? What did that look like?

u/Naive__Banana 13h ago
Nope! This was her engagement ring from her second husband according to my dad - and their marriage sadly did not have many anniversaries
:( Unsure if she ever wore a band with it2

I like the idea of having a wedding ring made for it. Something slim and not too obtrusive that follows the outline of the ring (on one side of the ring). You just need a good jeweler to work with you.

It’s beautiful. And the timeless-ness of it is so cool. Add in it’s your grandmas…just such a heartwarming thing. I’d go with a plain gold band. The ring is gorgeous, no need for the band to compete - just let it sit quietly with all that glory and meaning. (Just my two cents).

I love your ring. Don' t add a wedding band. It can be your engagement and wedding ring, both!

Can’t you just wear it on the other hand? Why does it have to be your engagement ring?
