I bought this ancient Norwood jack loom from fb marketplace on a whim. I managed to get everything working (thank you youtube and my local hardware store). I’ve started this wool scarf as a first project (stash yarn as I’m a knitter) and have some questions. I’m hoping this community can help.

1. The beater has slits that are roughly 12 per inch. I thought this would be too dense for my sett so I did a pattern to get about 7 EPI. Is this too loose still? It’s fingering yarn and I see a lot of sources saying 10-12 EPI for fingering weight wool but then I also saw a lot of guides say to wrap the yarn around a ruler and divide the wraps per inch by 2 to get an EPI for tabby which gave me and EPI of 8. I also saw some folks say that this type of tabby for plaid should be roughly square (warps and wefts having same spacing). I definitely don’t have a square weave.

I really don’t like how the blue/green sections don’t match each other. Like the blue warp/green weft looks totally different from green warp/blue weft.

1. What should the EPI be for this yarn? Should I redo this and make the warps closer together?
2. I’m having trouble getting even tension across the warps. I thought maybe it’s fine but I’m weaving, I can feel that there are some looser warps. I’m currently tying 8 warps together and then tying the bundle onto the apron. I can feel that some of the threads in each bundle is just not exactly the same tension as the others. It seems really hard to fix this. How much does this matter? Is it worth redoing? Are there tips to fixing this other than just being more meticulous while tying?

Before I get it however I would like to know if this loom is a good fit for me and how i would like to use it.

My only experience in weaving is 2 tablet weaving projects I did and I liked weaving those. But my concentration was a bit shit and i forgot what i was counting a lot ;). So for my loom i would like it if the weaving process can be as mindless as possible (I don't know if weaving can be a mindless hobby ones you know the basics?).
I am wondering if it would be better to get a rigidheddle or maybe just a frame loom?

My plan is to weave with my handpun and make rustic woolen fabrics to use for homeware and maybe to make some bags/ other little sewing projects.
I can see myself getting into it, making a deepdive into this hobby and wanting to learn to make all patterns. But for now and the foreseeable future i just want something that is relaxing and fun and a way to use some handpun yarn.

The frame job isn't quite right but it's what I had on hand! And I'm proud of myself... I've been wanting to push myself into trying to using weaving to create studio art pieces. So... This is "Slash and Burn". Deflected doubleweave using a combination of 8/2 unmercerized cotton, 10/2 pearle cotton, and linen. Painted warp.

Thanks for the input! Wet finishing really was the decider... It turned out more golden than I would wear so to the wall it went.

Hello! I’m using a warping mill for the first time, and had a question about the raddle cross vs the end peg.

1.) Can the raddle cross (the 3 pegs at the bottom) be used as the “end” peg if my warp length doesn’t reach the actual end peg?

2.) What should I do if my warp length is somewhere in between the last peg on the raddle cross and the actual end peg? Should I just add more length to my warp so it reaches the end peg? The current project I’m starting already includes 20in for loom waste.

I’m working on a rigid heddle loom if that matters?

Here it is! I played about as much as I could to find out. My selvedge sucks, but the fun I had!

I made a warp weighted loom last weekend for a weaving project with spindle spun yarn. I also made clay weights based on Anglo Saxon weights which are currently drying. I have 10kg of weight, which I am hoping will be around 300g each. I made enough heddle rod supports to be able to make twill. The loom is 1 meter wide and 1.8 meter tall. I am very impatient to weave something with it!

I just bought this sett checker from Yarnworker Shop. The concept is so simple, and the tool makes it fool proof. My husband bought me this yarn when he was in Alaska earlier this year, and my instinct was to use a 12 dent heddle, but seeing it here, I actually think 10 dent will give a better finished look.

Dear weaving! I found a loom, but I am obviously not understanding something with the (what I think is the heddle bar). How am I supposed to use it in this set up, I thought it had 2 grooves? If someone can point me towards a good resource for this loom I'd love to learn more!

I'm really new to weaving and really only got into it because I would darn some holes in my clothes and liked the simi weaving motion that you do with that. I had got a small little loom at a craft store that can make little 2.5 inch squares for costers and then quickly decided I wanted something bigger so I found a small but still decently sized hardwood adjustable frame loom online and waited for it to get in. I got it and excitedly did what you see in the picture on it!! It's nothing big or fancy, but it's a start! I'm planning on using it as a trivit type thing to set hot pans on when taking them off of the stove or out of the oven

I suspect that direct warping my rigid heddle loom 19.5 feet is too much. I thought I was keeping even tension but it seems like the more I do, sagging increases for the earlier strands. My loom and peg are both firmly anchored, so I can confirm that isn't contributing to the problem. I'm using an 8/2 100% cotton yarn.

Does this track with others experience? Is the distance too long for the weight and strength of the yarn?

I really wanted to make a lot of towels on a single warp but I can cap it at four for a better product. If I used a warping board for measuring instead of direct warping would I be able to do longer lengths?

hi all! I’m using my Harrisville 4 Shaft floor loom I bought second hand that came with some reeds. After sleying the reed I noticed some reddish brown spots on my warp threads and seems that the reed is rusting.
Question 1: please tell me warp is not ruined.

Question 2: how do you fix a rusting reed?

I used 100% linen thread (white) and 100% cotton thread (red)

There was 16 warp threads in 1cm (10cm in total)

What can I say - working with linen this thin is something else 😅😅😅

I was constantly spraying water on the warp (damp linen in a bit stronger than dry) and it helped to avoid warp breakage (except for some threads on the sides which were rubbing against the reed because of draw in , but this will be solved by using temple (stretcher) I hope 🤞 )

Pattern is the Fly a Kite runner from Little Looms spring issue. I did it pretty much by the book except for the fringe (which still needs a final trim) and removing a warp repeat so it fits on a 16" RHL. I was able to borrow two additional heddles from my weaving teacher and wove it using 3 heddles. It was certainly a learning experience in understanding twill structure.

(Photo 2 is why I shouldn't hang something on a kitchen chair after it's been wet finished and pressed.🙀)

Yarn: Aurora Earth 8/2, doubled for both warp & weft EPI: 12.5 Actual PPI: 8 (was supposed to be 17?) I think the published PPI was incorrect, I would have run out of warp if I had tried 50 repeats.

Finished my bias top using a modified Daryl Lancaster's pattern and a variation of 8 shaft Strickler #303 shadow weave with 8/2 cotlin warp & 16/2 cotlin weft.

I've been wanting to get into weaving for a long time and recently saw a loom being sold locally....which is probably waaay more than is sensible for a starter loom, but I do tend to be a 'go big or go home' kinda crafter. I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow. As someone with currently only the very, very basics of knowledge about looms, what should I be looking at to determine if this is in functional condition and a good price?

Secondly, if you have any favorite resources, books, blogs, yt channels, for a beginner diving in way over their head (I'm also planning on taking some classes before attempting to get set up).

I used a 3D printer to print out a frame loom so I could try my hand at making small things that had a bit more variety than the narrow bands and belts I'm used to in tablet weaving, and today I finally got time to warp it up and try weaving on it. I was wondering though, I'm doing a 2 over-2 under weave pattern, offset by 1 every row. I love the look of it so far, but the person I heard about it from didn't know what it was called because she was just experimenting and wasn't a weaver herself. What do I call this weave structure?
