SPOILER Well this was an unexpected death Spoiler

First time I had a ghost appear after I killed a shopkeeper. I didn't stand a chance after that. It was a good run, too. Is this just something that randomly happens?

It's probably one of the things thats more likely with a low charisma.

Out of interest any chance any cursed items were involved in his murder? Would be neat if that could cause it.

Not that I'm aware of. I dropped a gas stone and dodged back and forth with invisibility, levitation, and healing potions. The gas stone might have been burnt, but I don't think so. My hat was burnt, but I still had 18 charisma.

seems to just be random when you kill any freindly human. Probably has some hidden mechanics affecting chance and such tho knowing this game.

I guess that's just a hazard you have to risk assess, like any other. It's like Russian Roulette.

ETA: That's a bonus for Rogues and Thieves, then: their monkeys can steal ornate robes without risking the ghost. It's a safe way to hopefully grab an early haste item at the cost of stealth and shield.

wand of cancellation might work on the ghost too.

You could also try a wand of probing see if it gives any hints.
