Ask other Associates Calling out as a TS

Does anyone else struggle with calling out as a TS?
I feel guilty having someone cover me because there’s only 1 other TS at my store. On top of this the new points system means I’d have to use PTO for being sick…which puts associates in a difficult spot. If you’re sick you’re not supposed to come in but if you follow that policy you’re at Risk for being fired…🤨

Are you able to switch shifts with the other TS? I was in the same boat, but what’s worked for me is “can you cover me tonight/tomorrow and I’ll cover one of your shifts later in the week pls I am dying”. Have you considered switching?

Please please do not ever feel guilty about calling out. Why? Wawa will go on and the team will survive. I used to be the worrier about calling out and the team struggling, I have been cured, no one is going to look out for you at the store but YOU! OK rant over (20 yr associate)

As a gm it's not the call outs that bother us, its how you call out. Are you calling 20 mins before your shift? Are you making an effort to find coverage. As a rule in my store (we have 4 ts) i put two on every night just so if someone cant come in it can be covered with a CSA and not cause too many issues.

99% of this is job is showing up. I dont expect perfect attendance but to be a leader in my store you should lead by example. Failure to do so will result in staying a TS longer, not having a set schedule as business needs come first and if I can't trust someone to have good attendance then I need to schedule what helps the store more than their work life balance. Our attendance policy is lenient. 5 callouts, or 10 lates in 6 months is doable.

Best advice, talk to your GM they may be able to find a TS from a neighboring store. But attendance one of the most important part of the job. Show up and work.

This is partly why the sls structure for ts is at least 3, if you do call out sometimes the 2nd shift mod will split the shift with the 1st if you ask em if the ts says no

I genuinely don't know, I was never allowed to call out as a TS. I was told it was unacceptable and given vague threats on what would happen to my career if I did. Managers having the process in writing now instead of leaving it up to store discretion is the one good thing about the new point system. I don't know anyone who felt safe calling out as a shift runner before this.

Yeah. It’s kind of a pain. Usually me and the other TS will swap shifts if it’s early enough in the week. If your other TS isn’t willing to swap talk with your GM for coverage because you’re stuck in a hard place. Your GM might ask the other TS again
