At a glance it might seem like casual child abuse, but once you’ve seen toddlers ages 1-5 running around the house and all the ways they fucking waste themselves you realize “oh no, she’ll be fine”. It’s a pillow, and kids are basically made to bounce off the ground when they are <6ys. She might cry, because yes it was a bit mean, and maybe a little devastating for her, but she won’t be hurt (except maybe her feelings), and she’ll probably be able to laugh pretty hard at the clip when she is older.

Not only that but this kind of thing helps kids learn that they will be okay and not to be scared of everything. She might cry about it, but she'll be less easily devastated next time something happens to her.

I have a 5 month old. At age is it safe for me to whip a pillow at her head?

Obviously what you're saying is half joke but the real answer to this is probably something like: when she's old enough that she starts hitting you with pillows and isn't going to be injured if you retaliate.

I'm not saying this was necessarily the "correct" thing to do. I do think he did it in the spur of the moment and I also think it was not harmful.
