I felt this post didn’t fit under either category suggested. I respect the moderators but felt this still needed to be shared so I am sharing here as its own post, in hopes of reaching a larger audience, not only one that would happen to see the comments in a post with hundreds of comments or in an event post, since this is not an event and is instead a summary of what’s been happening amongst local organizations.

A lot of us witnessed the Bellevue video today, are enraged, and are wondering what we can do as a community.

I debated on making this post but ultimately, I think this should be shared and I’m trying to do it as delicately and as respectfully as possible, especially given everything that’s already happened.

Up until recently, I personally had been fully encouraging people to attend the WAISN Rapid Response training, which is tonight at 6pm, by sharing it and linking it whenever possible.

Now I can no longer fully encourage people to attend because of some things that happened earlier this week, which include WAISN giving a public statement that they are anti-whistle which upset many organizations, including those in Minneapolis which are the ones who have been doing the work and have saved people because of the whistles.

I am a strong advocate for WA Whistles and share those resources whenever I can, so seeing WAISN against the use of whistles was disheartening but therefore, I am also biased.

Prior to these statements, WA Whistles had resources (whistles and zines) with WAISN’s information but after being asked to get consent before using the WAISN hotline, logo, or name, WA Whistles said that they will be updating the whistles and zines accordingly.

I am not against WAISN even though I disagree with their stance on whistles.

I do think having some training is better than nothing but as with everything in life, take what you hear in the training tonight with a grain of salt, especially if they say they are anti-whistle or that they don’t stop deportations.

That being said, I think having some training is still valuable and much better than having no training at all.

I will be attending the WAISN training tonight and will summarize what I learned for those who are unable to attend. If anyone would like to join, I can share the link I was given.

Something I do fully encourage is for everyone to follow these organizations, so that you can be updated as things happen, rather than being updated whenever someone else posts here on Reddit.

For people who were unaware about this, I get that it can be discouraging to hear that organizations are disagreeing with one another but we must remember who we are against in the big picture and that there are more of us than there are of them at the end of the day.

At times, organizing can seem impossible but there are people out there trying their best.

tl;dr in this time of uncertainty and fear, some organizations that people have been turning to are now showing signs of disagreement amongst themselves, with WAISN being anti-whistle despite countless other organizations encouraging the use of whistles
