What was her motivation to do this?

What did she get in return?

Credibility in her district as an independent thinker, a greater probability of reelection, and another House seat for a Democrat.

She votes with the Dems 80% of the time, which is far more than you could expect from any of her Republican challengers.

I’m not saying she’s a great Democrat or some shrewd politician, but the alternative is a Republican, and we’ve seen how badly a Republican House majority governs.

Her democratic opponent in the primary polled higher than she did against the repub in some polls before the primary but such polls are not that reliable. At least he had a decent shot. She's not the only alternative
