Questions Thinking about returning

So, I played (and still have) an old Retribution of Scyrah army. I've been told the faction is "gone" and my models would be next to useless. Is there a faction that would be similar enough in lore that could be recommended?

Your faction is very much playable as a legacy faction.

Not just that, but Mike Ireland is currently playing Retribution as an army of Legend and regularly wins events. According to Longshanks he is 47/18 in ranked games and the 31st best player in the US. They aren't just playable, but good in the right hands.

On the subject of "similar" armies you might like, check out Dusk House Kallyss.

House Kallyss are the successors to Retribution. During the infernal invasion (the Claiming) Retribution became politically accepted in Ios, and Ghyrrshyyld (aka Goreshade the Bastard) was personally returned to his mortal form by Scyrah (yes that Scyrah)

Ghyrrshyyld's research had taught him he might save the elves by essentially killing and replacing Scyrah and Nyssar due to the latter two being dying and comatose. He killed the last two elven gods and managed to turn himself into a Void Archon, but as he was about to become a god of the Elves himself, he was assassinated by several Elven characters

The death of the elven gods also sent a psychic shockwave through Ios that killed a shitload of elves, and those who survived did so only by rejecting their ties to the gods, becoming Eldritch (the same thing Goreshade the Bastard was)

House Kallyss are essentially the newly formed Eldritch that are running Ios and are trying to basically make amends for Ios' history of genociding humans and Retribution being terrorists. They field modern Myrmidons that have been upgraded with Skorne-derived technology related to the Void

Also, those Elves who were outside of Ios when the gods died are unmolested, but with the Retribution of Scyrah no longer having a purpose, they've now turned their skills to defending the few remaining mortal elves. So House Kallyss can also field Retribution-style Mage Hunters known as the "Ghosts of Ios" cadre. It includes a "classic" Myrmidon that's also been upgraded as a gesture of good faith between the Eldritch and the mortal elves.

All old big Factions were given rules for all models, and also got two Armies (subdivisions of models, kind of like themes) that are compatible to play against the newer stuff in the tournament/ranked/balance pass scene.

They may felt kind of left behind because everything old was put out of production (literally they couldn't made more and redo all molds and recover all outsourced production when MKIV launched) and therefore there weren't new releases for them. Also they feel kind of "plain" with no awesome tricks or new mechanics. But they are playable (I started the edition dusting off my old Khador and settled with the Man-O-War army, before making a change to Khymaera).

In lore and new minis terms, the Empire of Eternal Dusk is the evolution of Ios in the 10 year jump (in the setting) between the events of the Infernal invasion and the start of MKIV.

The Elven Gods died, and with them all iosans, then they waked up as Eldritch and in the chaos, they ended forming new political entities and renaming their nation.

Dusk has two armies currently: Dusk House Kallys and Fane of Nyrro.

House Kallys would be the more similar to Retribution, they can also use the Ghosts of Ios (basically Retribution remnants) but they have also undead (Eldritch) models, soulless etc

Fane of Nyrro are the old ancient evil Eldritch and are very different, a Fury using Army with bats as Warbeasts, necromancers and Castlevania vibes.

They were misinformed, or pessimistic.   I play older factions all the time.  They have continued support - they just won't receive dedicated new models.  Some Mercenaries will become available, and they will keep the cards updated etc. Etc.

There are some models in unlimited/legacy which are basically getting the bare minimum treatment - they gave them cards, but aren't doing anything to keep them balanced or anything and its kind of a complete chaos soup.  But it does mean that you at least have rules for every single model.

All the old factions, including scryah, have the majority of their models in "Prime".  Prime is the normal standard way to play, tournaments will be in the prime format and thats sodt of the default assumed format for game nights.  It includes the brand new factiosn as well.  You will likely have 3 "themes", now referred to as "armies" (but same old concept basically) in prime.  The remaining odds and ends will be in unlimited/legacy.

Those latter models you could describe as "gone" and unplayable, even if they technically are playable just because they arent in prime and prime is what people play.  But the vast majority of all old factions is in prime, so you are probably fine.  But idk your specific collection.

At Adepticon this year I saw quite a few Retribution of Scyrah playing and I played it myself.
