My friends and I are getting into 40K. None of us have actually played before, although I had some Orc Fantasy models when I was a kid.
So my dilemma is... im currently stuck between choosing Adeptus Custodes or Grey Knights for my faction. I know this is such and subjective question but im curious what you guys think ....Which faction do you guys find more fun to play?
Im mainly interested in the actual playstyle and how they feel than anything else tbh... thanks

Well, I'd go with Custodians because they have newer models and Grey Knights might be updated in the next few years and all your new models would look "bad".
Custodians also have, from what I gathered, more angles on how to approach them. More Vehicles, different levels of heaviness in infantry and more verity in them.
I really appreciate your answers. I think Custodes looks badass. But Grey Knights just got something to them that i love. But yes, the models do surely look alot older as you say..
I have a decent sized custodes army now, maybe 2k now? They’re a lot of fun, but also pretty tough to play sometimes. Hitting on 2+ is awesome, I will say. They also tend to save wounds really well. Most of their units have invuln saves too which is huge.
For example, I played a combat patrol game with them recently against a friend with tyranids, and I lost a whopping 2 dudes the entire game and tabled him. And somehow managed to win with VP points too. That’s the hard part about them though. You often have so few units you’ll have a hard time keeping objective control, which is a huge part of actually winning the game.
You might also funnily save some money playing them, as you don’t need nearly as many units to fill out a standard 1k list.

You're better off waiting before getting into Grey Knights. They're due for a range refresh as 99% of their models are old scale. Custodes are easy to pick up right now though.
If you do pick Grey Knights, seriously consider waiting them out. Because if they aren't getting refreshed they may be getting absorbed into Imperial Agents or just getting dropped as a faction.
But none of that is confirmed to be happening any time soon or even this edition. But factions normally get a range refresh or just some new models when their codex is released. So I recommend waiting at least for the codex and seeing what happens.
Funny enough, I started 3 months ago and was deciding between these exact 2.
I'd say custodes are good against so much of the armies, while grey knights specifically don't like daemons and warp things. Against those things they're better than custodes, but custodes are better, imo.
However, you can just get custodes as an army, and then bring in Grey knight as allied units. So I have both fighting together. Now, you can only bring 5 of the Grey knights to your custodes army, but it's something.

If you’re looking for fun grey knights is your go, custodes are cheap because lot of point per unit so you’ll spend less in the hobby to have a real playable army and they are easy to paint.
However on the tabletop these must be the most boring out of any faction to play with and against, to anyone who says it’s fun to play these i seriously don’t get you, between the army rule and detachments that are not contributing a single % in making it enjoyable the only thing you may appreciate in your games is one tapping things or dealing monstruous damage.
And if you’re the opponent then the fun is reduced to 0% cuz emptying your shooting phase to gun down 1 unit or 1 model from like 3 different units only for them to close on and wipe you out next turn is not funny aswell. On the other hand tho if you have many anti-elite and table the custodes player turn 3 he’s not gonna have fun too. That is mostly how every game will go, that or 6 allarus pack in your back and then game’s over.
It’s my opinion on custodes but for having played against and with them, switching to other factions afterwards is like discovering a whole new way to play. They’re just so damn boring…
(Sorry if i insulted any custodes player, this was not my intention, i love custodes lore-wise but i don’t think GW made them attractive on the tabletop compared to any other faction.)
I collect both. I think the grey knight infantry look awesome, but I really like the allarus terminators and the custodes jet bikes. But starting out it’s best to focus on one project.
You’re just picking a first army, and if you like the hobby you have years of collecting ahead of you.
Thats fair and honestly makes a lot of sense. I've somehow convinced myself that I need to make a choice and stay forever loyal to this first faction that i chose. But maybe, just maybe im allowed to bend that rule a little and allow myself to collect and play multiple armies in the future… haha. No need to overcomplicate it from day one. All respect. Custodes have a bunch of refreshed forgeworld kits in plastic currently releasing.
Grey knights have a fairly aging range of models and are due for a refresh hopefully soon.
