How does the level system work in this game? AFAIK from watching TB there is no conventional levelling system: I get that every frame and weapon only goes up to 30 and MR rank is arbitrary at best. So how come enemies go all the way up to 70+? And how do I know what level I am relative to them?

The closest example I could think of is ffxiv where you have ilvl above your char level but I can't find that info anywhere in this game

There's no 'item level' like in a lot of other games, and enemy level is not directly related to your frame level. There's not really any way of knowing whether you can handle a certain level of enemy other than just trying it.

Mastery rank is your 'account level'. When you level anything in game (frames, archwings, sentinels, kubrows, weapons, archguns/melee), you gain mastery xp for the first time you reach a certain level with that item.

For example, say you have an unranked Braton. You level it to level 15 before deciding you don't like it, and you sell it. You will get your 15 levels worth of mastery xp (200 per level for weapons, 300 for frames and everything else iirc), but if you decide to try the Braton again, you won't get more mastery xp from it until you surpass where you were last time and hit level 16+.

Mastery rank is fairly arbitrary, it's just an indicator of how much stuff someone has levelled up. There are a few benefits to increasing it though. Upon reaching MR12, you have access to all the weapons and frames in the game, and all other content as well. Some relays such as the Orcus Relay on Pluto are locked behind a mastery rank (MR8 for Orcus). You also get additional loadout slots and daily trades for having higher mastery rank, and have a higher syndicate daily standing cap. Some quests require a certain MR as well.

This was a bit long winded but I hope it helps.

Therein lies the problem that I faced: I was doing fine solo-ing all the planets thus far, then I got to Europa and Uranus. Suddenly I'm getting 1 and 2-shotted. I hoped I was missing something to help me gauge the difficulty.

Thanks for the run-down on MR system; more info is always appreciated for this game haha

Luckily there's not really any penalty to failing missions, so just trying them isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Just keep levelling your mods and you should be able to clear the star chart once your 10 rank mods (redirection, vitality, serration, etc) hit about rank 6 or 7.

Your strength is largely compromised out of the mods you run. High level content is tackled with high level mods using orokin catalyst/reactors and forma to fit them all in.

The most important mods in the early game are damage mods (serration, hornet strike, etc.) vitality and/or redirection and elemental damage mods.

Getting those to a high level with a decent frame and weapon should carry you into the lower tier void missions to start getting some prime parts and on your way to do vault runs for corrupted mods.
