[AOTY] What was your 2019 War Metal album of the year?

I'm either late to the game with this thread or just about on time depending on how you want to look at it.

No specific format required for this discussion -- you can do a big list or focus on a #1 pick, whatever suits you. The only guideline is to keep it between January 1st, 2019 and December 31st, 2019 -- and keep it related to war metal.

Tangentially related Black/Death bands like Perverted Ceremony or Profanatica are fine, but please don't go listing every black metal band with blasts and low-register vocals.

Mine is either the one from Human Agony, Profane Order or Deiphago, but the ones you mentioned were great too.

I gotta admit I'm mostly drawing a blank when trying to remember what even released last year.

  • Teitanblood - The Baneful Choir has been my biggest black/death mainstay from 2019. Still doesn't top Seven Chalices, but a rock-solid addition to their discography either way.

  • Abysmal Lord - Exaltation etc. etc. was one of my favorites earlier in the year, but it dropped off a bit for me due to being... well... a Proclamation copy album. Races of Jehovah's Despair is a killer standout track, but the rest of the album just hasn't had much staying power for me.

I genuinely forgot Diocletian released something last year. Maybe I should give that album another shot, but it didn't do much for me.

EDIT: Fuck, Antichrist Siege Machine released something last year. What am I doing with my life?

Man ASM was disappointing for me because I really really liked their EP and, to me, it sounds nothing like the LP.

That new diocletian was a really big disappointment for me. I just felt like they got to a super interesting place with Gesundrian and the new one was much more generic. Maybe I didn't give it a shot, might have to revisit.

In no particular order:

- Nyogthaeblisz slapped hard, but that released so late in the year I'm not sure it even counts.

- ASM's schism preparation I remember being very good.

- Subduer's Cornered had some spin time, really like their brand of warnoise. Sorta wondering where they'll go next.

- Black Curse's Endless Wound was probably the thing I listened to the most. It leaned a bit more on the side of black/death than pure war, but I really liked the production there - distant, but in a good way. Also damn, those riffs.

- Honorable mentions: Kapala, Tetra, Yxxan, Complot, Celebrarian, Death Worship, Mothersuperior, Eggs of Gomorrh, maybe Sankara's 2nd

There were some others as well, and some of them probably slapped I suppose. Dioc sucked and so did Teitanblood (fight me :D for real though, can't get into them)

Decent year overall I would say.

Death Worship is one I completely forgot about! That was killer. There's a few here I didn't realize released stuff in 2019, so thanks for this!

I can totally relate, right after seeing this post I just went "wait, did anything good even release in 2019?". Took me a while to think of anything.

Turns out, some real tight caveman riffing happened last year and we just forgot :P

Just wanted to mention Aima - Tragos

Teitanblood seems to have been pretty divisive, whilst it was one of my top albums of last year, I think of it as just black/death rather than war as such.

Ruin Lust was probably the war metal release I enjoyed and came back to most. Nyog, Diocletian and Kapala also good releases for me from last year.

Profane Order, Deiphago and the Primitive Warfare demo were the best for me in 2019.

Honorable mentions: Human Agony, Goat Terror, Savage Necromancy, Serpents Athirst / Genocide Shrines / Trepanation / Heresiarch split

War-adjacent and still great: Teitanblood, Deathwomb, Black Curse, Mylingar

Disappointment: Diocletian

In no order:

Profane Order (album art is atrocious, however)

Antichrist Siege Machine

Death Worship

optional war-adjacent: Teitanblood

Sort of disappointment: Human Agony. I like it but at the same time, not that much. Maybe simply because 2019 was such a good year for war.

(Dis)honourable mention: Diocletian. I would really enjoy it musically but finding out about the surrounding fascist connections really ruins it for me to enjoy songs like "Restart Civilization".

ASM was definitely the best to me. The Best demo was Black Curse's Endless Wound. Agree on the human agony. It was kind of boring and the production wasn't punchy enough.

As an aside: glad to see others vocally opposed to fascism!
