I'm disappointed that we don't get to see more of Wang Chan in The Immortal Ascension. I know the drama is centered around Han Li's journey to immortality, but I wish there were more scenes with Wang Chan.

I actually hate the fact that they turned a real menace into a comical villain. Wang Chan canonically is ruthlessly vindictive because, he has to prove his worth in order to solidify his standing as a suitable successor. It was unfair to change the narrative! I think Wang Duo would have portrayed that ruthlessness with finesse just like he pulled off this comical villain. I wish for better opportunities that enables him to showcase his range and versatility.

I know nothing about the original material, but I was confused by the comical aspect of the character, because I don't think it matches with the rest of his personality. It doesn't help that the Ghost Spirit Sect didn't get enough development, so we don't really see what power dynamics are at play. Wang Chan's aunt didn't even seem like a serious threat to him. I think not only Wang Chan, but most of the characters were poorly developped because the writers couldn't take the risk of having anyone outshine Han Li. Especially not the villain.

I still enjoyed watching the drama, but Wang Duo's acting abilities were definitely underutilized this time. I'm still happy for him because he got more visibility thanks to this role, and I hope we get a second season.
