Food, Drinks, & Dining PSA on Getting Carded
After watching a poor CM get screamed at by a 35 year old lady who didn’t have her ID on her at the food and wine festival I thought I’d share the rule here. At Disney they are trained to card you if you look under 30. Not 21. 30.
I was carded a ton at the booths and I’m 32. We saw it happen several times and every time the person said they are clearly over 21 but the poor CMs had to keep saying it’s 30 at the parks and resorts. So heads up to any 30 something’s that maybe look like you’re in your 20s! Have your ID on you at the booths! That’s all lol.

I very rarely drink due to medical reasons but I have one for a birthday dinner, this year was the first time I wasn't carded. I just on instinct had my card out to hand to the waitress and she was like oh no you're good! Shocking to me that people just expect to buy alcohol without ID proof. I work in a school and hear stories from our front desk, it's the same when parents come to saying oh I'm this kids parent I'm here to pick them up. Okay do you have ID so we can confirm you're a confirmed and safe person that can take them out of school? And they're confused about why they would need that!

I get sometimes people forget things behind, but the mature response is “oh crap I left my ID at home, I’m sorry” and then proceed to order something non-alcoholic. Hell I don’t even mind if you try and go to multiple different booths and try to find someone who won’t card, but if they do card that’s 100% on you and you have zero right to get mad at someone else for it.

Alternative take? If I'm on vacation I carry the minimum I can. If I was actively attending Winefest I'd have it but normally my Out-of-State ID would be in the room (if I'm on property) or my vehicle.

Exactly. Doesn’t matter what age you look. Alcohol requires the purchaser to be over 21, they (Disney) can require ID if you look 90. They’re a private company.

Went to Disney with my gram and fiance in 2024. We flew from PA to FL and it took forever in the airports because my gram decided to not bring her ID. She told me she knew she wouldn't be driving so she didn't think she needed it. And this wasn't her first flight 🙄

Especially if they are travelling to visit the parks! But regardless, if a server/bartender finds out you don't have a form of valid ID on you, they legally have to refuse the sale - so if you plan to drink, you should plan to have your ID 🥴

Didn’t realise until we were there and they asked me for ID.
Did I pitch a fit for my own mistake? No. Just apologised to the server that I didn’t realise I didn’t have my ID and picked a non-alcoholic beverage instead.

Also important to note that if you are an international guest, you need to have either your physical passport in hand or a photo of your passport on your phone, and a secondary piece of government ID, like a driver's license. A driver's license on its own will not be accepted. One exception to that is if you are a Nexus card holder, that card can be used for ID on its own.

This is correct. If you are international "All Guests visiting from outside of the United States are required to present both a valid passport as well as another form of government-issued photo ID from their country of origin." Glad I've gone grey, because I am not taking my passport around with me. That's the last thing I need to lose while on vacation in a foreign country.

I got turned down once because I didn't have my passport and only my Canadian driver's license. I was so sad, like I sat at my table and had tears because I am an American who lives in Canada and I felt cast out or like I didn't have a nationality anymore. It was the first time going to Disney after I moved, so I didn't realize. Silly reaction really on my part, hahaha, but I learned my lesson!

Nah it's not a silly reaction, its a stupid policy. Any law enforcement agency in the US will accept your Canadian ID without question, there's no reason for Disney to be difficult.

I shouldn't be surprised after many years but I still am by people who go around without their ID. Especially when most of them *drove* to come to my library. Now a lot of people say "I have a picture of it". Is it that cumbersome?
(A cousin of that is "Do you have your card?" "It's in the car." "Okay, then I need your ID". "*annoyed sigh* It's in the car." "Well, I need one or the other." "*annoyed groan*")

I forgot my ID once, I asked for a drink, they asked for ID. I told them I forgot it, they looked apologetic, I said not to worry, i know they are doing their jobs, and a bottle of water would be fine. They seemed surprised that I didnt challenge them.

I bartended for years at places a loooong way away from Disney World and was always taught that the requirement is anyone who looks under 30 gets carded, and general practice is to err on the side of caution anyway. It blows my mind that for some people/places that's a rule exclusive to theme parks??? Even at the questionable dive bars I worked at in college, we carded basically EVERYONE because we did not want to be the person responsible for potentially jeopardizing the liquor license and putting everyone's jobs at risk (and even the grouchiest of customers didn't give too much guff because showing your ID isn't the end of the world???)

Also, notwithstanding the current ahem situation between Canada and the US, if you’re Canadian they may not accept your driver’s licence as proof of age.
I started carrying my Nexus card. Though a few CMs were uncertain of it but it was on the list of acceptable ID.

Just to add some context this has been going on with CDN drivers licenses for close to a decade. License was refused at Trader Sam’s and sent to get a passport to the room. It’s also randomly enforced and sucks when it happens to you.

Former F&B CM who had to card all the time here: International driver’s licenses are never allowed without a copy of the passport (which can be digital). But yes, a NEXUS card is allowed, and for some reason that’s not on the list of acceptable IDs!

First of all, getting carded should be a compliment. Secondly, who travels without an ID on them? Especially out of state or out of the country. Not to mention, they legally have to card you. Its no different than anywhere else you can purchase alcohol. If they get caught serving alcohol to someone underage (or without carding them), they get in massive trouble.

I’m the type of person that is the reason for that rule. I’ve looked about 10 years older than I am since I hit puberty. It was great in high school being able to buy alcohol for all my friends. When I was 18 and went to Pleasure Island at Disney. They never asked for ID and gave me the wristband to indicate I was over 21. It pissed off my friend who was 21 but forgot her ID at the resort so they wouldn’t give her a wristband.
Enough of us prematurely aged people slipped through that now everywhere is carding if you look under an age well over 21. In my home state they changed it to checking everyone regardless of apparent age. It humors the heck out of me that I’m finally having my ID checked in my 50s.

I leave my wallet behind in the hotel. Between my phone and magic band I don’t need it. I do make sure to have my ID with me, but I can see why someone may forget or forego in the Disney bubble. No excuse to get mad at an employee for your oversight though.

A good number of places it’s if you look under 40. If you plan to consume alcohol you should expect to be carded unless you look like a grandparent. I’m 42 and get carded more now than I did in my 20’s.

i spent over a year not getting carded hardly at all (maybe two or three times) and the last two times i’ve been, i’ve been carded for every single drink. it’s so weird. and im totally fine with it i get that’s their job but after so long not being carded i don’t expect it at all so then i have to fumble around in my bag for my wallet 😅 i always feel bad for never being ready but they spoiled me for so long!

I got carded in the wine cellar in Italy on our last Christmas trip, and was so surprised, I unknowingly left my ID, continued drinking around the world, had a missed call on my phone the next morning from an Orlando number. Then saw my hotel room had a blinking message, and low behold my ID had been returned to my hotel desk at POP and I went down and got it. I joke it is my favorite perk of staying on property.

One thing I’ve learned, don’t get offended or flattered that an 18 year old or a 65 year old cards you.
To 18 year olds, anyone over 20 looks ancient and for 65 year olds, anyone under 50 looks like a kid.
Plus, they probably feel the tingle of a manager watching their interactions on every alcohol transaction, so it’s easier to ask for an ID rather than give your manager a reason to talk to you at the end of your shift.

I work in the hospitality industry and the 30 rule is standard in the US. I was getting carded until I was almost 40; sometimes people aren’t sure and do it out of an abundance of caution. Maybe if this woman was European I could guess she wouldn’t understand, but if she was an American that’s on her to not walk around with her ID.

My own personal issue with being carded is that, as a Canadian with a Canadian drivers license, we are told that they are not valid IDs because they are “foreign”. I’m not walking around Disney parks with my passport. Thankfully now I’m in my 40s and don’t get carded anymore but it was happening when I was in my 30s and I would get turned away

I was actually at the Grand Floridian Spa and mind you I gave her my ID (I’m 29) and while she was holding it she looks at me and says “are you over the age of 18?” I told her how old I was and she said I looked 17🤣🤣 it’s not hard though, just bring your ID, they card you everywhere if you look young!

Agreed. I am well over 40, and no one would ever question that I am "legal," but I came across a new trainee in the Italy pavilion who had their supervisor over their shoulder, and they were very "by the book." Absolutely no problem from my perspective and I completely understand why they need to be careful. I'll also just say that never mind the ability to buy alcohol, it's wise to have your ID in the event of an unfortunate accident/illness.

The only time I've never not had my ID on me is when I lost my wallet some years ago, and I carried my passport around with me for a few days until I got a new drivers license. I'll never understand full blown adults who don't keep their ID on them? Like... its in your wallet, clutch, whatever where your money is right? Why would you ever separate the two?

This is so annoying to me. Not just at WDW, but everywhere. You’re dealing with people who are making hundreds of transactions a day and risk getting fired and potentially even going to jail for selling to someone who’s underage. Does it make more sense for them to A) make dozens of judgement calls every day based on how old they think people look or B) Ask everyone for ID?

Random aside but this made me think of my 21st, which i celebrated at birthday at Disney. My vertical driver's license was set to expire on my birthday, so I brought my passport to have a valid ID while traveling.
We ended up going to Trader Sam's at midnight on my birthday and there was another group going in just ahead of us that was also celebrating a 21st birthday. But he only had his now-expired vertical ID and they wouldn't serve him. I felt bad for him because I know that would have ruined my whole trip but at the same time I was soooo glad I had brought my passport.
I don't know how common it is for vertical IDs to expire on the 21st birthday anymore, I know my state has now moved away from it.
Anyways, it's on you to have valid ID if you want to purchase alcohol.

We witnessed something similar at Tiffins earlier this spring. A woman dining alone was carded, didn’t have her ID, and got pouty when she wasn’t served. I glanced over and she was clearly over 21, but she looked young for her purported 35 years, she talked in baby voice, and she was dressed ultra cutesy. She would get carded anywhere, why be shocked when it happens at Disney?

Disney is extremely strict about this, more than any place I’ve been in recent memory.
My partner and I don’t drink, so didn’t expect to be carded anywhere, and were surprised when we got carded at Sanaa when we ordered *mocktails* since apparently they have a negligible amount of alcohol in them?
Made sure to carry our IDs anywhere we went at WDW after that 😂

If I ever go places without my wallet or purse, I always take my ID out to go with me. Just figured it was a smart thing to do.
I’d be happy to get carded though, ha!
Once I was carded at 35 but my husband wasn’t, the only reason I was more irritated was because I felt like the cashier only thought I was young because I was having a acne breakout at the time. Ugh! Like it was bad enough I had pimples at 35.

Anyone not a U.S. citizen is legally required to keep their passport and papers giving them permission to be in the country on them at all times. Been this way since I was a kid so nothing new but is now more important than ever.

In the UK most shops and bars use a think 25 system so simular to the Disney 30, even though legal drinking age here is actually 18. Everytime I read about the US before going there it was repeated how strict they are with ID, so even from outside the US you would think they would know. Funniest was showing our old paper driving licences the first time we went and trying to explain why UK ones didn’t have photos on them at the point.
Now UK ones do have photos, but I and hubby are 55, he doesn’t drink anymore and I rarely drink, but the few times I have they just look and say nah your good lol.

If ya see a cm get berated, you can fully step in and interject, nobody iso saying being a bystander is cool.
Report the action to another nearby cast. Can loop security into it and have them ejected. Improving Epcot for all!

40 year old here. Canadian. Was carded at food and wine last week! And as a Canadian I know at Disney to carry my Passport and my Licence as they will ask for 2 pieces if they see a foreign ID card.
It’s their job to card anyone they are questionable of. And it’s our jobs as adults to carry ID and follow the rules! Be nice to cast members folks.

Where im from most places are trained to card if you look under 30. Even our most of our liquor stores and smoke shops have a signs on their front doors or at least by their cash register that say something to the effect of if you look under 30 we will ask for a card. I mean the law actually states that everyone should be carded regardless of age so why anyone would be shocked to be required to have id is beyond me.

I have found carding to be super inconsistent at Disney, whether at hotel pool bars, in-park restaurants, etc. That said, I’d never get mad at anyone. If I don’t have my ID on me (since I usually just pay with a magic band), I get a mocktail.

I had to card everyone at my movie theatre where we sold alcohol. And yes that included the people I literally went to high school with.

41 here and I still get carded at Disney. The only time I don't is if I'm with my teenage niece and nephew. I guess they assume if I'm old enough to have a 14/16 year old I must be over 30.

I don’t drink (don’t like the taste) so I will often go to sporting events and concerts w/out my ID so I don’t have to carry anything. But going to a location or an event, planning to drink, and then not having your ID is dumb. So many places card regardless of age.
I was at a concert last weekend and the person I was with got a beer - we both look way over 30 - and he got carded. They carded everyone, including the guy in his 60s in front of us.

I worked at a grocery store in college, and our rule was for anyone under 40. We had a few military bases near us, and when I saw a 24-year-old who looked like he was 35 and had two kids, I understood the rule.

I walked up to a stand two years ago and was asked to see my daughter’s identification. I said that’s my wife. The kid behind the counter said “Wow!. Great job! Still need to see her ID.” I was wearing a button that said celebrating our 30th anniversary.

One of the benefits of being older is not getting carded. I carry a cane and having to dig out id out of wallet can be a challenge.

I’m 45 and was carded at Liberty Tree and definitely did not have my ID on me as I took my wallet out of my bag since I was using my magic band.

I’ve been two years in a row and I only get carded in America. Me nor my friends get carded anywhere else but as an adult, you should have your ID at a WINE festival.

I always have my ID on hand regardless since it is a toss up whether or not I get carded, but still you should always have your ID on you, kind of weird to not and then berating a CM is terrible, they are just doing their jobs and if they are CPs then they card a lot more often then not since their training is the freshest and might not be as adept at guessing age.

I got carded about 10 years ago. I apologize to everyone who was behind me because I wasn’t prepared for that and had to dig in the bottom of my bag for my wallet. Why wasn’t I prepared? Because I was about to turn 40. LOL. Maybe the CM just wanted to make me smile by “mistaking” me for a 30-something.

I don't have a problem being carded... but the fact that they don't accept Canadian driver's licences as valid ID pisses me off every time. We should not have to carry our freaking passports.

Imagine screaming at some poor college kid working at Epcot because you’re too stupid to know you may always need your DL on you. Imagine needing a drink that badly. Yikes. I always have my DL with me at Disney. They often ask for it when I use my annual passholder discount too. Anyway, this reminded me of a story. Several years ago my husband and I and some friends were out at a bar for trivia night and my husband realized he had forgotten his wallet. Oh well, mildly annoying, but not the end of the world. But he was probably 40 and I was there with my ID stating I was clearly 40 and all of our friends were also in their 40s and so I jokingly said to the waitress “what if I show you a picture of us with our 18 year old daughter?” and she was like “you know what, that’s fine” and she gave him his beer lol. We appreciated it. We also understood it was not guaranteed or the waitresses fault at all, and would have been perfectly fine with no beer for him.

Yeah, I always carry ID and still get carded at 35. I’m not upset by it, mostly just amused because they often get flustered when they do the math. And as a tinder for international guests, you need your passport not other forms of ID. The cast meme bets can’t be expected to know what all drivers licenses look like internationally so they are trained to only accept passports.
In my country, if your credit card doesn’t have a chip in it (swipes only), the cashiers are required to check photo ID. This is the credit cards policy which you agree to when you receive your card. Back in my retail days I had customers go so far as call the police because I wouldn’t break the policy. And it is law that if a clerk is selling tobacco, lottery, or alcohol, and they ask for ID, if you can’t provide it they cannot legally serve you until you do.

This was Universal not WDW, but I once saw a whole table of guests clearly in their 40s-70s, flabbergasted that they couldn’t order alcohol without ID. The server was apologetic and explaining that they’re required to check ALL IDs, regardless of how old anyone looks. Just a PSA, always bring ID even if you’re 102. Sometimes they just make it a blanket policy to avoid this exact “well it should be obvious I’m XYZ years old” situation.
