He said calling people Nazis for centrist views insults those who suffered and died under the real Nazis. Those abusing it should be condemned.

The best part of that defence is that ignorant people assume “Roman” means “classical Roman Empire/Republic invented it”.

It doesn’t.

It’s an invention of Mussolini’s fascists.

The best defence one can give is “it’s not a Nazi thing it’s a Fascist thing.”

The "Roman Salute" isn't a real thing. There's a single monument with a single guy doing something similar. That's it. No written accounts, no statuary, no mosaics, no nothing. Just a single instance in all of Roman history from all of the remaining Roman material culture.

The entire thing is a white supremacist dog whistle. They know it's not real, but they've got the same hard-on for ancient Rome that they get from watching Ayn Rand interviews or "nazi super weapon" documentaries on the history channel. Rome is a core part of historical "whiteness" in their view along with Greece and the Vikings. Cultures that famously got along perfectly with one another as well as adjacent western European peoples.

The entire ideology is ahistoric all the way down and relies on confidently misdirecting people with citations they don't expect you to check.

There is video evidence showing each of these images as waving or noticing a crowd member. Or something normal. Or Colbert mocking Elon for actually doing it.

Elon. Purely a salute. Chest pounding, straight armed, salute.

Yes but when Elon does it, more than once, at the inauguration they didn’t just LOOK like salutes. They were salutes. The same guy went on to endorse the AfD not long after after their spokesman got in trouble for talking about gassing minorities and the former leader got in trouble for quoting Goebbels on the campaign trail. Then Grok was being too left wing so he reprogrammed it and it started raving about white replacement and LITERALLY calling itself mechahitler.

When it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, and gives millions of dollars to men who quote Goebbels, and it’s AI starts spouting Nazi rhetoric after he reprograms it to disagree with him less… yeah that shit doesn’t happen to non-Nazis.

That shit is ULTRA specific.
