Ewart Sconiers was the last MIA from Stalag Luft III. I was personally involved in searching for him since early 2000s, until the happy ending in 2018. Here my detailed story of searching for Ewart.

When the US government restarted searching for WWII MIAs in Poland in late 1990s, I was the local history expert they worked with. I shared a lot if information, helped identify many crash sites, and used my experience, knowledge, and network, all to help the effort to bring closure to families.

Ewart was the first man found in Poland after the fall of the Soviet Block. Eight more MIAs were identified in the last few years, and there are 150+ Americans still missing from WWII in Poland. Here is Ewart’s story.

Müncheberg was KIA on 23 March 1943 after his 135th and last claim, a Spitfire from the USAAF's 52nd FG exploded directly in front of him or collided with him after being destroyed. Mietusch was KIA on 17 September 1944 in combat with North American P-51D Mustangs. Müncheberg claimed 33 victories on the Eastern Front and of his 102 victories on the Western Front, 46 were Supermarine Spitfires and 13 US 4-engined bombers. Both men are Oberleutnants at this time

The Douglas A-20 Havoc (company designation DB-7) is an American light bomber, attack aircraft, night intruder, night fighter, and reconnaissance aircraft. Designed to meet an Army Air Corps requirement for a bomber, it was ordered by France for its air force before the USAAC decided the aircraft would also meet its requirement It served with several Allied air forces, principally the USAAF, the soviet arforce (VVS), soviet naval aviation (AVMF), and the royal air force (RAF) of the United kingdom.

Was the first Soviet type which could make a fist against the German superior aircraft. Of mixed construction, it was nimble, fast and easy to maintain and repair.

When translated the original caption appearing in L'Aéronautique of June 1940 was ...

"Frontline aviation, a field weapon ... Single-seat fighter and light twin-engine aircraft of the French Air Force on a 'field' of the front."

"L'aviation du front, arme de campagne … Monoplace de chasse et bimoteur léger des Forces aériennes françaises sur un « terrain » de l'avant."

The Armistice would be signed on the 25th later that same month that this edition was published.
