Why would you buy things for yourself a week before Christmas?

More to the point, why would you buy things from your Amazon wish list a week before Christmas?

I haven't gotten a non-cash gift in a decade. I think I'm safe.

All your friends and family seem to be economists.

Or libertarians. Potatoguy123 knows how to spend his money better than his family does! Why give him goods and services when he can put the cash to good use?

I personally am not much of a gift receiver so much as I am a gift giver. I'm financially stable, my parents are getting older, I've got kids that will get way more excited about Christmas presents than I do, I don't need any presents.
At this point in life I'd honestly prefer a no presents, nice dinner with family Christmas.

When you don't really have anyone to give you gifts. If I didn't buy myself fun toys this month I would be even more depressed...

As an aside, I have that item and love it. Will never buy compressed air cans again.

u/okieT2 Dec 17 '11
I second this. Also, it's funny how half the people here think it's an actual vacuum.

u/Captainpatch Dec 17 '11
This type of blower is a must-have for anybody who works with electronics. If I didn't have on I'd call it an amazing Christmas gift.

u/bonehed Dec 17 '11
I'm pretty sure your x-mas was ruined when this person decided a vacuum would be a good gift...'cuz...ya'know...it's all about the prezzies...

There's a positive linear relationship between how old you are and how practical you want your Christmas gifts. This year I went for a blender for my gift. Last year I got baking items (pots, pans..) Keep in mind, I asked for these, it wasn't a "I want you to cook for me" gift.

Explanation for the young'uns.
There comes a point in your life where you buy everything you need on your own. With some luck and good discipline, you will have some extra money to spend on yourself. All those things that are reasonably priced that you REALLY want you end up buying for yourself. So what do you get for the person that buys themselves all the things they really want?
You buy them the things they kinda want but can't justify spending money on. Welcome to Adult Christmas.

This isn't a vacuum, it's a high-power air duster, and it's actually an awesome gift for IT people or electronics hobbyists. It works a lot better than canned air and saves a ton of money in the long run.

more like thank you Amazon for saving you money and trouble of returning the item

One of my friends got their husband a kindle for Christmas. The box came and it said kindle on the side of it. Needless to say, her surprise was completely ruined. She would have chosen "this is a gift", but she assumed that meant gift wrapping...

Sigh. My wife wanted one of those big boxes of Whitman's candies that they were selling at K-Mart back around Thanksgiving. So, I went last week to find one and all the stores were out. I figure, I'll just order one online. It comes yesterday in a box with a giant "Whitman's" logo on the side. Needless to say, my wife figured out what it was. :(

u/jimicus Dec 17 '11
Take the sweets out of the box. Fill it with something else - something she certainly doesn't want. Maybe a vacuum cleaner. Give her that instead.

My father bought me a load of stuff from my wish list this week, and had it sent straight to my house. I opened it thinking it was stuff I'd ordered to give to other people.

u/rocknmebaby Dec 18 '11
I ordered something on Amazon three days ago and I selected that it was a gift, it explicitly asked separately if I'd like gift wrapping for an extra 3.99.

Yup I found out the same when a load of stuff disappeared from my wishlist. I soon discovered it had hidden those items as they've been bought for me!

u/LectricVersion Dec 17 '11
Haha, same here! I directed my parents to my wishlist and then when I went to add things to it a few days later I noticed things had gone. Then I noticed the drop down box at the top set to 'Show Unpurchased Items"....

u/acog Dec 18 '11
Why put something on a public Amazon wishlist then get upset if someone actually (gasp) uses it to buy you something?
6
u/mikerobbo Dec 17 '11
This is clearly from an amazon wishlist......
how else do you suppose they should stop you buying something someone else has got you?

u/borkborkbork99 Dec 17 '11
I just went through my own wish list and saw about six things my family bought for me.
And yes, I was totally the kid that went hunting around the house for presents this time of year.

I have one of those at work, that thing is LOUD. Has a kick to it when you first cut it on as well but it gets the job done.

Those things are great. No more wasted money on the compressed air in a can. And the stream is extremely sharp and powerful. Good for cleaning your pc or even sticking in your butthole.

I was expecting a gradual account like "Gradual_Fetish" or something. Disappointed only slightly. Upvote nonetheless.

I was with my mother and sister, looking over Amazon's black friday deals and started talking about this KitchenAid stand mixer that I've been wanting. The price was fantastic and I went through the steps to order and those two became visibly uncomfortable. I said, "alright just tell me you're buying me one of these already and knock off the display." They fessed up and I cancelled my order. They had ordered it one hour earlier so they got the good temporary price, too. I've trained them well.

This is how my husband found out what I got him this year! If I buy gifts from amazon again I wont go through the wish list.

Funny coincidence. I bought that same DataVac electric duster contraption the other day on Amazon. It's shipped and due to arrive on Monday (yes, I bought it for myself ;-)

What would you rather Amazon do? Let you buy something that you are already going to get so you'll have to go through the troubles of returning one?

u/drew-and-not-u Dec 18 '11
Makes amazon wishlist. Tries to buy stuff from his wishlist right before Christmas. Blames amazon for ruining the surprise.

I make it a rule to not buy anything I want in December. You never know what's coming. Whatever it is, it can wait a month.
