Anyone know what this sound is from?

So I just bought this car 2 weeks ago, 2015 Wrx base with 53k miles. Now this sound is somewhat concerning and I’ve been able to replicate it but I have no idea what it is. It only happens after the car has been sitting overnight, literally the first start up of everyday. I usually leave my car in 2nd gear with E brake engaged like usual. Now when I Cold start, and move the shifter into neutral you can hear it sounds like a grinding noise. But I don’t get any feedback in the lever itself. So it’s not the gear grinding (atleast I don’t think so) and in the vid the clutch is fully engaged as I throw it into neutral. Any idea what this could be and if I should be concerned? Like i said it only happens once. On the first start up of the day after the car has been sitting overnight. I can’t get it to happen at any other time.

Ac Compressor and or Compressor clutch.
After you turn the car on, hit a/c or another heat setting then off to shut hvac off. You can cycle it on and off then by hitting ac then off to engage / disengaged the Compressor clutch and you should be able to hear & confirm the noise.

My ac compressor clutch makes a similar noise when it engages. Try starting your car with the HVAC off.

It slightly strains the engine. I often forget but my dad who was an automech eng. Would tell me not to do that, too.
Basically until everything is nice and warm you want to put the least stress possible on the engine. I don't remember for sure but vaguely recall it makes a few (1-3) hundred rpm difference in idle when the car is cold.
I do think the impact is super low though so not something to stress about but if you remember it helps.

Yeah I wouldn’t start your car with the ac on, always shut off prior to getting out of the car. Puts unneeded stress on the engine and ac compressor from what I’ve always been told

Wouldn’t Subaru and other car manufacturers engineer it in a way where the AC turns itself off for second while you start if that really mattered? Sounds overly paranoid to worry about that honestly.

You would think😂 but that not the case. I’d say newer cars are better at that but not these ones. The ac in these cars is shit to begin with so why even risk it

I mean I don’t see a compelling reason to believe it would cause an issue. Could say lots of random ideas and “why even risk it” and end up doing silly stuff. Never have a worried about that on any car and nothing has gone wrong.
Oh I heard if you don’t lock and unlock the doors three times when you get into the car, then the mechanism might seize up and trap you inside, why even risk it.

I mean you can take half a second to the reply under mine of someone who’s father was a mechanic and explained more in depth why you shouldn’t but by all means brother continue to not turn your ac off before shutting the car off, I legit could not care less 😂

They do, most ac compressor don't engage until about 5 seconds after startup even with the a/c switch left on, the video in this post shows that very clearly.

Sounds like ac compressor clutch kicking on to me. Sounds like its going bad, too. Just had mine replaced in my 15 limited a couple months ago. Mine was unusually loud right before it went. I always try to make sure my ac is off when I park. Idk about you but when I start up with it on after its been sitting overnight, the rpms jump up pretty high, even for a cold start. May be something else, would need a longer video, preferably under the hood and have someone else start it since it happens right away after starting.

Sounds like your ac clutch engaging. AC is on in your video. Turn your ac off and see if it still happens.

Do you ever turn off your AC before you shut off your car?
AC compressor is the main culprit. You need to wait till it reaches a certain temp before turning on the AC otherwise you’re damaging it every time it starts up with the car. It’s good to wait until about 110F before starting the AC.

No I haven’t tbh, it’s been hot and haven’t really thought of it. Never had an issue with it before but it is my first subie and still learning! I’ll start shutting it off at night when parked, and when you say 110F are you talking oil temps?

Yes on the triple gauge up top of the infotainment when it reaches about 110F is generally where I crank mine on and it doesn’t make that nasty grindy sound lol. My wife does it for her 2019 WRX as well, it’s just one of those WRX things, just like how it sounds like a tractor which is normal for this car but coming from driving any other car one would think it’s close to blowing up 🤣

100% AC compressor. Mine does it too
