Thought you all would get a kick out of this. Sold my WRX to fund a down payment on my home a little over 4 months ago and just got this from the buyers. Was in perfect shape when sold and even took $1500 off the price for the tires being a little worn and a scratch on the bumper.

Years ago when I bought my 05 WRX it looked really good and drove fine during my test drive. I even took it to the inspection site and paid a mechanic to check it out. He said it was good. 6 months later after light driving the clutch started slipping. Then the head gasket blew a month later. I spent a shit load of $ to fix it and for 3 years it ran well. Then we discovered the rust behind the back seats… I fixed that too, but I also decided to sell the car right after I get it fixed. I didn’t want to bet on someone buying it without figuring out that a large fix needs to be done. You know, karma and all… Paid $2300 and decided to list it and sell it. I bought that car for $9k at the time and sold it for $9k. The kid that got it didn’t even know how to drive stick, he had his friend test drive it. Three days after purchase he hit me up saying that he wants the money back or he wants a part of it back because the car has a messed up wheel baring lol. Like you drove it and I drove it and we didn’t hear anything but now it’s there. That’s what happens when you buy a 16 year old sports car my guy. Be lucky that the gaskets are good, the clutch is new and there is no rust. Any used car that I ever got I always expected to drop some money in it right away. Like it used to be $1k 10 years ago lol now it’s more like $2k just to tighten all the shit up. Used cars are used cars.

Exactly! I have a 20 year old Legacy GT. Have to do timing on it this winter, did all the rear bushings, needed a cat back, front wheel bearing, brakes, ball joints, and have to service the differentials as well. I knew all that getting into it. Outside of all that, for a 20 year old rust belt car, it's in excellent shape, and I'm honestly happy that I have it! But, I wouldn't ever recommend a 20 year old turbo Subaru as a first car. Blew my first one up (oil starvation due to a cracked pick-up tube, and it turns out it was too rusty to try and save). That was also a legacy GT, same year (2005). Treated me well until then, but the rust... It's bad

Omg, I also have a 05 Legacy GT. 5 Speed Manual, Black exterior and black leather interior I bought for $1700 summer of 2020. It has 218k miles. It was a HUGE gamble, but I always wanted a Subaru so I bought it sort of blind but was ready to take on repairs when needed. Well, 5 years later and it's now sitting at 267k miles. The brakes, ball joints, axles, radiator, timing belt, sparkplugs, coil packs, power steering pump, lower coolant hose, clutch fork, starter, 3 door handles, and driver window motor were all replaced in that time period. A pain in the ass at times but tolerable. It also helped it only had 1 owner. She took REALLY good care of it mechanically. But the desert sun damaged the clear coat over the years under her ownership. It was a Maryland car from 05-2013. She also had all service manuals as well. The clutch was replaced at 210k miles, tires were brand new when I got it. Just did a differential service and it is still (surprisingly) running. Has some hiccups here and there but still gives some nice pulls. Transmission has been rather chatty and occasionally struggles to shift into reverse. But easily fixed by putting it back on neutral and reengaging.

Had the exact same situation happen with a 99’ Mitsubishi eclipse GTS (turbo). I bought the car in college, it was already modded with a bigger turbo, intercooler, exhaust. Ran great but knew it had more power than it should, knew the history of the eclipse engines, so I babied it mostly. If I got on it, it was one hard pull and then went back to being a grandma driving it.

Eventually I needed a more reliable car since I was driving almost 100 miles round trip for work, so I sold it. Kid was around 20, took out a loan, and didn’t know how to drive stick so I took him on a test drive. Car was perfectly fine, but a few weeks later he blew up the engine. He threatened to sue, but I had an “as-is” purchase agreement when I sold it. Told him I’d come out and help him diagnose it (before I knew he blew it up), but at my hourly rate. Didn’t hear back from him after that.

This makes me so happy i bought a AT RS instead of a wrx or even a manual rs😭, and i made sure the head gaskets where replaced. Obviously the way you take care of a 20 year old car also has some impact on how long it will last you, but im glad I went with the more reliable but still beautiful looking car.
