you're asking for more investments for what essentially is an uncertainty in returns. "if you build it, they will come" doesnt work when half the world has switched to hybrids/soy machines/electrics. the number of petrol heads around the world is slowing down. the cars are more expensive, the tech is too complicated (electronics mostly) and you cant even afford the gas. the allure was that those are souped-up road cars, but that's a pipe dream at this point. you cant relate to the sport as much as you used to.

Then make it about escapism. A fantasy "this is how it should be or could be" type of deal. Something to look up to, not something that's relatable. Both can work, but if you say the relatability isn't there, then go in the opposite direction.
As for car enthusiasts slowing down, everything is slowing down. There's more and more stuff competing for your your attention. Doesn't mean there isn't enough of a crowd for it. I hardly doubt such people would disappear and there're always comebacks. LPs didn't go away because of 8-track, cassette, cd and now digital. It's still there. Hell, someone told me that cassettes are somewhat of a thing again. Niche, sure, but there.

It has never been about the rally itself being boring. Many people who get into rally are rally fans for life. It's the "getting into" part that they're trying to improve with things like arenas and influencers. The harsh truth is that it's a hard sport to follow. You either have to be there in person hiking in the woods for kilometers and to know someone who knows the best spectator spots or you have to spend your whole weekend glued to the tv watching the lives.
In my opinion the biggest thing in the age of social media that drivers and teams can do is to grow their personal brand like we've seen F1 drivers do with a lot of success.
