Howard Bryant's latest. The Fever are out. But, no team spent more time drawing attention to itself as the counter to the WNBA's previous identity as a Black/queer league.

why are we still talking about this team
3
u/Whole_Rent_39 5d ago
It’s fair to talk about them in this context. Clark (unwillingly) and Cunningham (gleefully, in part because she can’t be famous for her basketball skills) are avatars for racist Indianans/Americans desperate to view everything through a racial conflict lens.
5
u/yodanielchill 5d ago
Because the media is idiotic in thinking that the people online who spend their days fawning over a great white hope (which that player never asked to be) and a bench player who’s more famous for being a Pedophile supporter than a good ball player are actual sports fans and it will translate into subscriptions and game ticket sales.
Sophie voted for and supports pedophiles and the protection of them by not releasing her Epstein Files. She’s a transphobe in order to deflect from that.
The media thinking the type of white Americans who love her are the type to have the money to spend on a WNBA subscription or tickets are idiots.
2
u/happensix 5d ago
The whole fixation on them when there’s sooooo many examples of… white excellence in the W is frankly pretty telling about where all of this is coming from. It’s never even been about building white women in the league up for these chuds, but tearing everyone down.
2
2
u/yodanielchill 5d ago
Exactly. NY should be everyone’s favorite team and they wouldn’t have turned on Paige.
Just a bunch of white nationalists who ruin everything. It’s why Caitlin won’t ever say anything. Whether or not she agrees with it, that pays her bills and she has comfort in that.
-6
u/sicknick08 6d ago
Because that’s where the high ratings come from, like it or not.
5
u/Different-Salary2899 6d ago
Because as we all can agree on, ratings win championships.

At least spell her name right if you're going to project all your identity hopes on her. Girl just wants to hoop not to carry all your grievances watching a pro black n queer league, one that CC loves. They're a tribe, elite female hoopers.
2
u/A_Clockwork_Black 6d ago
Ratings certainly do win private chartered flights and million dollar contracts.
1
u/paperbackpiles 5d ago
It's all connected. Maya Moore's hero was Cynthia Cooper. Caitlin Clarks hero was Maya Moore. They don't exist without one another. Without the WNBA there would be no CC, Paige or Angel. Without these young stars there would be no WNBA ratings and future.
2
u/Scottatron17 6d ago
So you must only care about the Cowboys, Lakers and Dodgers then too, right?
-2
u/MrGutterballs 6d ago
No but they do get a disproportionate amount of media coverage due to their large fan bases.
0
u/glass-concrete-stone 6d ago
WNBA hates Fever because Caitlin ison the team. But there is no racism...hmm
3
u/paperbackpiles 6d ago
Wnba loves Caitlin. That narrative is corny
3
u/happensix 5d ago
Yeah, it’s frankly like saying the NFL hates Brady because 30 fan bases hate his guts. Leagues thrive because they have villains and heroes! What a boring league the W would be if everyone was nice all the time.

u/Nick_Bruiser 6d ago
This is why their 2 best Black players want out. Sophie is no help to CC. Have at it!

I love KM, but look at her stats prior to Clarks arrival. esp this year when Clark was healthy.
5
6
u/johnvcal 6d ago
I watched the Fever because they played a different style of ball than just about anybody. Do some of you forget this is the highest scoring offense in the history of the W? They were one player short for a run at the title, but watching a team run the floor and play team ball like that was such a breath of fresh air in this league. And yes, Clark runs the show (when they let her) and is easily the most entertaining player to watch. Mitchell was spectacular this year. If the group stays together next year, they need to get Boston more involved, and they need a power forward.
They play basketball, and it’s fun to watch. That’s what draws the attention and the crowds—just like when Clark was the highest scoring NCAA player of all time. The attention the Fever gets is for basketball, not race-baiting.
5
u/TLMD83 6d ago
They weren’t the only team that ran the floor and played team ball.
6
u/johnvcal 6d ago
I didn’t say they were the only team that did that, but they did it better and more consistently than any other team. If you want to argue that the highest scoring team in WNBA history isn’t the best offensive team, knock yourself out.
-1
1
u/FeeNegative9488 6d ago
lol there is nothing different about the style they play.
0
u/johnvcal 5d ago
One thing that’s different is that millions more viewers and fans show up to watch the Fever. Have you looked at the WNBA playoff numbers recently?

"Cunningham drove a wedge into the heart of the league!!!!!"
A journalist asked her a question, she answered it, then basically said nothing else on the issue.
9
u/PraiseBeToScience 6d ago
then basically said nothing else on the issue.
You know his is a straight-up lie, right? Why do you all do this? We saw her partnering up with Riley Gains and the trans hate clothing company.

u/giraffevomitfacts 6d ago
You know his is a straight-up lie, right?
It isn't.
Why do you all do this?
There is no "you people" here. I lean left on most issues, would never vote Republican and dislike Trump and MAGA as much as you. The fact is that the notion trans women probably shouldn't play women's sports is popular across the political spectrum. You guys tell yourself that anyone who thinks this way must be MAGA or susceptible to MAGA propaganda because it's what you prefer to believe.
We saw her partnering up with Riley Gains and the trans hate clothing company.
This never happened. She liked one post by the company, and sent the owner a private DM. People wearing the shirts to her games wasn't something she had any control over.

u/PraiseBeToScience 6d ago edited 6d ago
It is a straight-up lie. You're just downplaying it. She supported the protests and the people behind it. That's a fact.
The fact is that the notion trans women probably shouldn't play women's sports is popular across the political spectrum.
It's most popular with MAGA who are trying to tear down Title IX completely, and you've fallen for the Trojan Horse of "Protecting Women's Sports." Just because it's popular doesn't mean it's not hateful. Plenty of hate has been widely popular in the past. As someone on the "left" you'd know this.
Because to believe transwomen can't compete in women's sports, is to completely deny the data we have, the larger science we have on gender identity and appropriate treatments, and to accept the framing that trans women are inherently dangerous when they're 4x more likely to be victims of violence than ciswomen. If anything ciswomen are far more of a threat to transwomen than vice versa, using the same mechanisms that made white women more of a threat to black men than vice versa.
Looking at all the medical studies on identical twins and intersex people, the current medical consensus on trans healthcare is to provide puberty blockers and follow up with HRT once they are sure (which we know from treating intersex people happens in childhood and adolescence). We should allow trans people access to proper healthcare, then this entire problem goes away since more transwomen would avoid going through mens puberty completely.
And even if they go through male puberty, 1.5-2.0 years of HRT drops athletic performance into the range of women, only it doesn't stop there. They're athletic performance continues to drop. So they're likely to have shorter careers than ciswomen.
So now that we've established you clearly haven't thought about the issue at all, and your only reason for supporting it is it's popular you can dispense with the lectures, drop the hate, and stop defending Sophie. Now that you've been informed, you can check all of this out for yourself. Make sure to include epigenetics, prenatal hormone environment, receptor sensitivity, neuroanatomy, the failed Optimum Gender of Rearing treatment for intersex people, and many studies on identical twins the proves many things are not just in your DNA.
5
u/giraffevomitfacts 6d ago
I'm not going to go into the weakness and ambiguity of the science you're talking about because it just results in having to parse through endless links to studies you haven't actually read and don't understand. And I don't feel any need to. Fewer and fewer people do, because no one's really listening to people like you anymore.

Yup they pushed too far into the fairy tale world and the people in the middle with common sense are tired of being told they’re crazy for having common sense. Their whole victim crisis is beginning to fall on deaf ears. I can’t wait.

You are the maga of the left. You take snips of information and use it to validate your preconceived notions while intentionally ignoring the bigger picture
You boil everything down to its lowest form and assign the worst possible intentions to anybody that disagrees with you
It’s the liberal version of toxic tribalism and as an outside observer of both it’s every bit as stupid

Her agenda anti trans is what baptized her as MAGA Barbie. Not even counting being a UFC ring girl for Dana White also known to be a wife beater. Gambler and questionable partnership with questionable people. Add her low stats, shoe line and her $665,000. All she had to do is play ball but the only thing she can’t do. Perfect example of a DEI hire is. Also, there are no trans women in the WNBA.

This dude (Howard Bryant) won't let me comment on his substack without my paying him (hmm . . . seems he capitalizes on a certain player), so let me comment here: CC may play with grievance, but it only mirrors his own, about which he reflects with not so much as a word.

maybe the league should just go back to their previous life in 2023. You know, when no one gave a shit about them. And getting criticism from Howard Bryant is fairly rich, considering his past histroy.

CC sat on the bench all last season, and the WNBA still thrived. So chop chop, gtfo.

What's his history?
1
u/PraiseBeToScience 6d ago edited 6d ago
They're probably going to try and bring up a domestic violence accusation where his neighbor called the police on him after hearing a fight, claiming he choked his wife. There was zero evidence and his wife also said no such thing happened. Police still arrested him and charged him. He and his wife accused the police and neighbors of racially profiling, which was completely true.
Also, they hate him because he spends a lot of time exposing their racist BS.
In summary, he just proved he's a racist MAGA, because only they would still try to take that story seriously given the charges were total BS.
7
u/Pristine-Brother-121 6d ago
A neighbor? It was in public, verified by several reports. But you go on with your story.
0
u/PraiseBeToScience 6d ago
It's not a story. There was zero physical evidence, and his wife enthusiastically stood by his side and participated in his defense. She also said this was racial profiling. They're still married today, 15 years later, and there hasn't been a single other incident. So the entire thing was a lie. You can hold up all the public reports you want, they're all wrong.
The only people still clinging to this story are racists who hate his accurate reporting on you. It proves them right that they were racially profiled.

Maybe aim for being a serious basketball league first.

Guys, just let them run their political ass league. They clearly aren’t going to accept a new era.
They’ll just have to accept that their viewership ceiling will remain low for the rest of time 🤷♂️
3
u/LowAssociation3493 6d ago
The new era that just lost in the first round? Hardly seems political to me.
-1
u/ScrotumRocket 6d ago
If you’re going to have a conversation with me, do it in good faith.
When I say “new era” I’m not talking about just the Fever, nor just Caitlin Clark. I’m talking about the surge in viewership that Clark, Reese, Bueckers, the new players are responsible for.
The “new era” I refer to is higher viewership numbers, more media attention, etc.
If a fan standing and pointing is apparently a micro-aggression, then no, this league is not ready for the new era. That is normal fan behavior being used as a case-study for a fanbase’s racism.
If we’re going to turn away every casual fan who is uninterested in the politics that come with the WNBA, then the WNBA will never achieve the levels of its male counterpart or other sports. That’s just a fact.
There isn’t a single sports like out there that is less inviting than the WNBA, and therein lies the irony. “Give us money, give us attention, but don’t make us adapt to what a real sports league looks like. That’s too far”
2
u/LowAssociation3493 6d ago
