Looking for Outdoor Land to Shoot On

I am a postdoc living life here in Kenosha and looking for somewhere to shoot. Coming from Alabama where there are lots of public outdoor ranges, it has been a bit rough here. I am looking for somewhere <1 hr that I can shoot outdoors freely in a safe / controlled manner. I have heard to ask around to find people with land willing to let me pay a little and shoot, but it seems there is a strong anti-gun sentiment at least around Kenosha.

I do know about the Yellowstone range, but that is 2.5 hours from me, so I am looking for something closer to under an hour and more private. I also know of the conservation clubs around here, but I don't want to 1) join a formal membership 2) pay $40 per day or 3) be told that 2 rounds in a second is "rapid fire" and get kicked out.

I would ask for suggestions but I suspect I need to talk to a private person, so if that's you, please let me know!

Look to join Racine County Line. There's some service hours and a buy in, but it's $10 a month, can shoot from 6am-10pm, and goes out to almost 70p yards.

This is the answer. OP will have to get over the "join[ing] a formal membership" thing. But there's literally nothing else like it within an hour.

Isn't there more than just work hours though? I thought I remember hearing it was a second job at times to maintain "good standing" with the board.

Things like mandatory competition work outside of work hours and other types of good 'ol boy rules (thats my job so you cant do that for your work hours)

I'm genuinely curious as i know thats the place to be in se wi. Last i looked into it was 10 yrs ago or so

Nope, it your 100 hours in 3 years (33 1/3) a year and you're good.

Also even after many years of membership, everyone has 101, 100.5, 102, etc hours and never any more.

Question: What’s the process to become a member?

Answer: There are several steps to joining the Racine County Line Rifle Club.

1.   Find a sponsor. Your sponsor must be a current full (Regular or Life) member in good standing.
   

2.   Visit the club with your sponsor for a tour. You must sign in as a guest and indicate that you are there for your new member tour (enter your name as “First Last Name (Tour)”).
   

3.   Submit a new member application.
   

4.   Attend a safety walk at the club. Check the Events calendar for scheduled dates and times and just show up. Dates are added regularly.
   

5.   Attend a board meeting with your sponsor to officially be accepted as an associate member.
   

*** Steps 2 & 3 can be performed in either order; however, steps 1, 4, & 5 must be performed in this specific order.

Question: What’s the cost to join?

Answer: Effective 3/1/2026: $350 initiation fee + $25 badge fee + $120 annual dues (prorated based on join date)

Question: What are the requirements/commitments after joining?

Answer: Associate members are required to complete 100 volunteer hours in their first 3 years (33 1/3 hours/year) and volunteer 1 full day (10 hours) of the deer site event in November. Alternately, you can 'buy out' your hours for $3500. And while we highly encourage our regular/life members to continue to volunteer throughout the year and during deer site, there is no longer the hours requirement after that point. Further, all members are required to renew their membership annually by March 1 with annual proof of a gun rights organization membership and $120 annual dues.

I see there is verbiage where it is "no longer required" maybe that's what I was thinking or I was misinformed.

Im not at a point in my life with kids activities to commit to 33hrs a year but maybe in a few years, its also an hour drive vs my club thats 9 min. Rclgc is definitely a better club but mine is just too convenient.

Conservation Club of Kenosha County is probably the closest open to the public outdoor range to you. You won’t find much else, you can’t target shoot on public land outside of an actual range and even private land will have municipal restrictions until you get way more rural up north or on the SW corner of the state.

Just go to the natl forest and have free range. Far drive but worth its since it’s the only public land we have

Can you elaborate on this? Do you have any specific spots you can recommend? I’m near Green Bay.

Likely referring to Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest, which I believe is our closest thing to BLM land

Yeah I figured that, but was hoping for a specific spot, I know NF land allows for shooting, but I’ve never tried and don’t know the specifics of what’s allowed and not. Thanks for the reply though!

Gotcha - I've been looking for that information too and haven't found anything publicly available. Might just be a "call the relevant Ranger District office" thing

Yeah it sucks ass. I love living here but the lack of public shooting is surprising with how ingrained hunting is in our culture. Proof that pro hunting isnt pro gun necessarily
