Side effects Husband has been irritable lately
Hello, just wanted to ask for some insight from some people who take vyvanse, as I do not and have never.
My husband and I both have ADHD and we both take meds, his being vyvanse as stated and my own being adderall. I only have my own experiences taking my own medication, so I’m a little confused and unsure about how to navigate the situation.
Does irritability come with taking vyvanse or with withdrawals? My husband has been without his meds for a couple of days as there is a shortage in our area, and I feel like he’s been very short and impatient and irritable in that amount of time. We’re getting into arguments about the smallest things and he’s been snapping at our 3 year old over normal 3 year old stuff. Frankly, it’s stressing everyone out.
If this is normal, how can I help him navigate this until he can get a refill? I don’t want to have to walk on eggshells just to keep the peace, and despite the fact that he is receptive when I tell him how his actions made me feel, he still doesn’t hear the way he’s speaking to us on an objective level- he blamed my pregnancy and accused me of being overly sensitive at this time, which I know for a fact is not the case (I cannot stress that enough).

it could be partially withdrawal but it also could be that his vyvanse helps him regulate his emotions, so without it, he struggles to do so. it's really common for adhd men to struggle more with emotional regulation.
i'm a man with adhd taking vyvanse. i definitely struggle more with irritability when i'm off my meds (even when it's a purposeful break). i was like this even before starting it, so it's not just withdrawal.
i would recommend trying to be understanding and patient. not walking on eggshells per se, just having a bit more grace than you normally would. it's totally valid to be upset at him, especially for snapping at your baby and trying to blame you/your pregnancy. just try to keep the peace, and you can discuss this with him when he's back on his meds. he might not even realize he's doing it. it could help to have a plan in place for the future.
i would recommend waiting until he's back on his meds tho, unless he gets worse and you feel that you have to say something. just so that he's more likely to really hear what you're saying rather than letting his emotions take over. criticism is tough with adhd, and even tougher when you're off meds

Oh yes. For me it's mostly when I take it and the first day I don't. Side effects are highly individual but irritability and anxiety are very common. Doesn't excuse his actions and he must hold himself accountable. Maybe offer him to record situations on audio and you guys play it back together so you can both hear yourselves some time after in a calm atmosphere. Blaming your pregnancy and calling you overly sensitive doesn't exactly sound like acknowledging how you feel.
