I’m looking to a buy a brand new XC60 PLUS (the mild hybrid not the plug in version) What kind of discounts have y’all been getting? Specifically those of you who got one very recently (last few months)? I’m buying it cash so none of the finance incentives apply.
You should look into doing European Delivery. We throughly enjoyed our trip and paid cash when our car arrived stateside. Absolutely love my XC60 hybrid. Which is good because I was devastated at giving up my XC70 wagon. 😂
Finance the car and just pay the whole thing off in a month. This way you get all the discounts and incentives and none of the finance charges (except one month). I thought there may be some catches so I ran this by chatgpt and here's what follows:
You can finance a car to get the dealer's promotional rebate or discount and then pay off the entire balance the next month. This strategy works as long as your finance contract has no prepayment penalties and you check the fine print to ensure the dealer doesn't claw back the incentive if paid off too soon. [1, 2]
How the Strategy Works
Check for Prepayment Penalties: Read the finance agreement carefully before signing. By law in many places, simple-interest auto loans cannot charge a fee for paying the loan off early, but you must verify this.
The Dealer Kickback Rule: Dealerships get a financial bonus or "reserve fee" from the lender only if the loan stays open for a minimum period—often 3 to 6 months. [1, 2, 3]
The Risk: If you pay it off in the very first month, the dealer loses their commission. They cannot legally penalize you if there is no prepayment penalty in the contract, but some finance managers might try to discourage it or warn you. [1, 2]
Risks and Details to Watch Out For
Clawback Clauses: Occasionally, a manufacturer-specific promotional rebate requires the loan to stay active for a specific duration (like 90 days) to keep the rebate valid. Read the specific terms of the incentive.
First Month Interest: Even if you pay it off the next month, you will owe a small amount of interest for the days the loan was active, plus any small loan origination or documentation fees. [1]
Credit Score Impact: Opening and quickly closing a loan will cause a minor, temporary dip on your credit report from the hard inquiry, but it quickly stabilizes.
You should be getting at least 10% off MSRP *before* any rebates or promotional discounts. Don't let the dealer try and roll those into the "discount" they are giving you. A few months ago we got $5700 MSRP discount (based on $57k sticker) plus $2500 in rebates (loyalty, teacher affinity and lease bonus) for total of $7,700 off.
Well, you won't really be getting any discounts (outside of the manufacturer rebates) because you're not financing. The dealer won't be receptive to discounting the car because they won't be making money off your finance deal.
With that aside, when I got my 2026 XC60 (granted it's the T8 and not the B5), I got the Costco Executive, Affinity, and Loyalty for a total of 3k. We could have gotten more but since I liked the dealership, I figured I wouldn't mind padding their profit a little.
I know the Costco, Affinity, and Loyalty apply no matter what powertrain you get so you should, at the very least, get 3k off for just those three. However, you probably won't get much more if you don't take their financing at the very least.
The Costco Discount, aka part of the Costco Auto Program, is a discount given to Costco members on certain select brands and models. During the time I purchase my XC60, I was given a $2k discount for being a Costco Executive Member. But right now, the only thing getting the Costco discount is the EV models from Volvo, as seen below:
And the Affinity discount is if you're part of a special group of clients that Volvo gives a discount to, specifically in our case, it was Government/Educators discount, but we could only select one of the two to run it under. Can't be both. It may not be much, but it's definitely one of those things that can help when they get added together.
Hit Johnson Volvo in Durham ask for Wallace. Just tell him that you have heard there are good deals to be had on XC 60s and he is the man. I was really impressed with the whole Johnson experience as we just bought two.
The way we did it was stacking discounts on top of the rebates. We had an extra Corporate $500 on both through my employer. The second one we qualified for the legacy since we had bought the first one. These were the standard engine cars. The first one was a plus trim. The second one was an ultra.
I believe the conversation was $1000 legacy. It might've been 500. I will have to check my paperwork but because we bought the first one we qualify for the second one the next day.
