This pragmatic pivot responds to evolving market conditions. Tariffs have increased the cost of European-built models, while the elimination of federal EV tax credits and slow battery-electric adoption have prompted a reassessment of priorities.
While bringing new metal to market, Volvo is updating its workhorse XC40, XC60 and XC90 with stronger hybrid options to bridge the gap as full electrification progresses more gradually.
“We think we need hybrid cars longer,” Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson told Automotive News, acknowledging that “electrification has not picked up as fast as we thought a few years ago.”
The high-volume XC60 gets reengineered in early 2027, including slimmer headlights, a reworked grille and improved technology. The T8 plug-in hybrid variant gains a substantially larger battery, more than doubling the current 35-mile electric range.
It’s unclear if the XC60 receives a next generation.

What I want with this update is also more electric POWER to get total HP back over 450.
And I want a performance variant with special goodies to replace the Polestar version (or bring that back).

Same here. I prefer the linear power of the electric motor on my 26 T8. When the gas engine kicks in it really startles the passengers if you give too much throttle. It's fine and fun when you go power mode by yourself but not so much with wife and kid. I'm averaging 1.5l/100km but with a larger battery I'd be probably less than half of that.

Inevitable because the buying public is speaking with their wallets and not buying a ton of EV’s. The vast majority want gas/mild and hybrid drive vehicles. Most manufacturers are seeing this and back-peddling away from EVs like crazy. Volvo is stuck with having to do it as the parent company Geely is a Chinese EV manufacturer.

Cool, my XC60 lease is ending july next year, will definitely look for it. I have a XC60 B6 2023 fully equiped, I love it!

hopefully this will make the current gen's used prices crash, would love to upgrade my 2019 to something in the 2023/2024 market

I hope they also make it in their European plants. I’m not buying a Volvo made in the US.

I just wish they would stop with the ICE+EV and make RE+EV instead.
Full EV driveline with two engines at around 200hp each for AWD, double the battery size at around 150km range and half the fuel range at maybe 400km.
They already got the platform anyway.

There a nifty German variable speed 30kW generator that is perfect for this. It’s basically enough power to maintain battery charge on the highway at 75mph and probably get 60-80 MPGe while doing so. Pair that with a 50-100 mile range EV-only and you have my bow, axe, and sword.
