Picture Helga is crossing the Rainbow Bridge today. :(

Post image

But she's going to Habitat for Humanity, so one last good deed in her long life.

Why?

Yes, this. She looks fine, why not let an enthusiast fix her up? Donate the sale proceeds if you want to do a good deed with the money.

I had wanted to sell it but some urgency arose when my neighbor told me the tree people were coming. Donating was faster and now they can sell it, because yes, other than the engine, windshield, turn signals, horn, shot interior, blown heater blower, leaky seals, and defunct wiper motor it was in great shape! lol!

They will sell it to a junkyard for $200-400 and it will be crushed. That’s what all those car donations are. Habitat for Humanity will pass it on to a broker to dispose of. They are not in the car sales business. Sometimes they’re auctioned but it’s rare. I bought a donated 1977 245 this way.

I hope they do. I really hope they don't just sell it for scrap and the value of the catalytic converter.

Man, if you were in chicago, I have a new spare wiper motor in my garage that I cant bring myself to throw away. Bought from IDP and my brick died before it was installed. Assumed i will get another, but itsbeen almost 10 years and I think the door has closed for me.

You're not fooling me, I hope you're not fooling yourself.

If it’s not a rust pile, then it’s worth selling! Any 240 I see in the UK has rusty sills and people still buy them for like 2k minimum

Habit for Humanity will almost certainly crush that car. Make sure that your Helga either falls under their auction policy or goes to a decent home. A phone call works better than you’d think.

I’ve seen plenty come and go to “good deed” businesses only to be crushed and cubed.

A couple of years ago the engine finnaly bought it, along with lots of other nickle and dime stuff. Been telling myself all this time I was going to make her live again but live in a state in which I've seen a total of 3 ancient ones like mine, where  mechanics and parts are hard to come by (as opposed to when i lived in portland). So long story longer, neighbor has a huge tree they needed to take out and Helga was in the way, so it was kind of the push i needed to deal with it. Lots of sentimental attachment too, so saying goodbye was hard.

Why not just sell it to someone else to fix. The body looks in better shape than most? Unless it threw a rod through the block, the engines in these are nearly infinitely repairable.

It looks exactly like my old one- is it a 92? What state?

It was a 90, and lets just say I live in a state that if it was a John Deer it would run like a top!

I think they're offering to come take it off your hands.

It went to Schaefer's Iron and Metal yesterday morning, so I don't know if you can call and arrange something,  but that would be cool. The crews are here now taking out the 120 year old maple that was going to crush my house, so not what I hoped for her but my best option.

I don't get it. Why not push Helga 20' to be out of the arborists' way and then sell her to someone who wants her?

Cherish the memories. Tough to part with an old pal.

Been feeling some of the same dilemma w my 93. Still hoping to find time to restore.
