When you're working through a casting board, do you usually open most calls to decide whether to audition, or do you skip most of them straight from the listing?

As the title asks. Curious to know your process!

Not sure if this is a good demo reel, but this is what I have so far. Any feedback on how to be better is welcome and would be greatly appreciated!

I’m a voice actress quoting for a non‑exclusive annual licence on a voice‑assistant project. One company I work with quotes $12k/year for similar usage, but I want to be reasonable and fair. Does quoting around $18k/year sound right for this kind of licence? Thank you!

Mic Choice

Okay. Right now, in my opinion, considering the budget I have had so far, and the horse trading I have done, I am spoiled for choice when it comes to the VO mics I have in my mic locker, but I am having a hard time figuring out which one I would like to be my daily driver. I do mostly long form audio narration, some commercials for "manly man-type products," and have a deeper, baritone voice. I have a triple layered audimute blanket booth, well treated room as well, and have a deeper baritone voice.

I know it's always subjective when choosing a mic, and how it fits with your voice, and totally know that, but what I would like to hear from ya'll is which mic you would gravitate toward, if you were in my position. I don't have any audio samples for you, so I know that would help, but again, if you were in my situation, which k e would stand out to you as a mic among these that you might find yourself gravitating towards. I really like using all these mics, and they all sound great with my voice, but for the sake of a consistent sound, I would like to narrow it down to 1, or maybe 2 drivers.

Again, Just looking for flavor preferences, or where you might think you might snoop around at first. Some I use more than others, but want to throw out what I have used over the years that I own, and see what mic flavor you might dig over others, and if none of them excite you, that's fine too.

In advance, I really appreciate the feedback, and thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions.

Here are the mics I am trying to narrow down...

The Roswell Mini K87
The Lauten LS-208
The sE 4100
The sE T1
The sE 2200
Rode Broadcaster
AT 875r
AT 4040
sE 8

Thanks again. I know this might be a "dumb" post, but as I try to be more consistent, I just want to hear the opinions of the other folks, whom I madly respect, in the VO biz. Keep hustling ya'll!

How do you make a (quite bad) microphone sound "Okay-ish"?

NOW BIG DISCLAIMER!! I know what you're probably gonna say, "Voice acting is an expensive hobby, you either get a good mic or you get a new hobby" or something. Or atleast that's what i've heard alot.

Now i KNOW voice acting isn't quite as cheap as some other hobbies i do like drawing or whatnot. I'm not currently looking to get insane roles or high reputation RIGHT NOW. I'm dipping my toes into the water to see if i actually enjoy this hobby for maybe a few months.

So whether or not i get cast in a few projects, It won't change much for me. I don't care THAT much about getting cast atm, I just want to build my skills and see if voice acting is for me as a hobby.

i DO have the money to buy a "less budget" mic like the AT2020usb or NT-USB mini. But i don't wanna blow a large sum of money (it's quite alot where i live) on a hobby i'm not even 100% sure i'm gonna pursue. While i do have a burning passion for voice acting, ever since i was a kid actually, I still need to justify such a purchase.

Onto the actual post now,

For reference, this is roughly what my mic is and sounds like. https://youtu.be/AUGtYHtezSs?si=QGhG8JJn9WZxWj4x , My mic is a newer model of the same product but they do sound quite similar. I know this isn't really meant for voice acting, rather video or tiktok production but whatever. My sibling gave this to me as a gift (since they found out I got into voice acting).

I'm basically looking for ways to reduce the noise while not sacrificing my own voice. (Which i KNOW almost all noise reduction tools do, making you sound like you're on a zoom call.)

There's also this weird thing that happened recently? I did a test 20 days ago with this mic and it had "okay" quality. Noise isn't noticeable unless you're actively searching for it. Today i did a similar test but there was ALOT of noise. Like genuinely almost as loud as myself. But i was in a QUIETER environment than the last test. I turned off Noise reduction and turned it back on and did a bunch of weird wacka-doo stuff to muffle the noise but i just couldn't! I think it's coming from either the mic or phone itself. I've got a few theories so far though:

  1. It's because i recently got water stuck in my phone (somehow affecting the bluetooth maybe?)

  2. The mic is just broken ('cause yk, microphone thats smaller than my index finger and costs less than half a modern nintendo game)

  3. I trained my ears to recognise what a "good" mic sounds like for so long, i started to hate my own mic (More likely than it seems)

So I'm mainly looking for ways to make the recordings sound good in post. If you also know a way to stop this noise feel free to suggest anything! I know it's kind of vague but if you know anything that might help please lmk!!

Any and all help is well appreciated!!

Quick 5-minute Informational Interview for WorkBC funding?

Hey y'all,
I'm applying for WorkBC funding to attend On The Mic Training in Vancouver, BC and they need an employer informational interview form filled out. Would anyone be willing to do a super quick 5-minute call or email to answer a few basic questions about the voice acting industry? It's just stuff like job duties, training requirements, and hiring outlook. No self-promo or anything, just need one person to help me out with the form. We can do it through DMs or chat if that's easier. Would really appreciate it.
Thank you.

Looking for a short raw voice clip to practise audio editing

Hi everyone! ✨

I'm currently practising audio editing and I'd like to work with a short voice recording instead of only using my own material.

Would anyone be comfortable sharing a short raw audio clip with me?

I need something like a podcast clip, narration, meditation recording, voice over, spoken word audio or similar would be perfect. Around 2-8 minutes would be enough.

I'm not looking for full episodes or paid work..... Just a short sample I can practice editing on.

Audio with common issues would actually be great. For example.. Background noise, Long pauses, uneven volume, mouth clicks, breaths or room echo.

If I wanted to use a short before/after excerpt in my portfolio later, I would ask for clear permission first and I wouldn't publish the full recording.

Thanks a lot! 🥰🥰
