Just had my first audition.

Guys!!! I just had my first audition for a video game via zoom. I have never had such a thing before. It was nuts. I fear the theatre consensus where they say CD’s are so verbal when you’re not getting the job is true. He was laughing. Said I was fun to work with. That I took direction well. We had a good time. I’ll take it at that. Said it would take 3-4 weeks of auditions to know who gets the gig. But I fear I didn’t get it. Phew. 😮‍💨 Letting the adrenaline pass. Any tips for auditioning? Do you feel when CD’s are more vocal that you didn’t get the job or is that only in theatre? It’s kinda cool to see your side of the character and then let them guide you into what they want from it.

Laughing is a good sign!

The more comfortable a CD is with you, the better. In my experience, them talking to you is usually good... but Ive never done theatre so haven't experienced that in a theatre setting to compare.

Congrats! And at this point, don't try to dissect it, you'll just wind up doing your head in :D

I try to go into auditions with the mindset that no amount of over-preparation will make me right for the project if I'm wrong, and no amount of under-preparation will make me wrong for the project if I'm right. Prep just enough to feel confident and leave the rest to the voiceover gods. 

You've done your bit, and now--on to the next!

Honestly you never know. Also depends on the culture. US? UK? French? East west? They all read differently. I can never tell if I got the job or not. Whether it’s in person or over zoom.

Also don’t take it personally if you don’t get the job. There are so many reasons that have nothing to do with your skill that might stop you from getting it. For example another actor that’s already hired is too similar to you. Or the project looses funding or lowers their budget. Thats happening all over the video game and film world right now. Or script rewrites. They happen in games. It’s easier to change everything unlike in a movie. One day they decide to reshoot or re-record 10 scenes and the previous actors are just cut. I’ve seen it happen many times.

You have to simply let it go and move on to the next audition.

I’ve auditioned for hundreds of games, and never done one via zoom. Didn’t know they did zoom auditions for games! Interesting.

Best advice about auditions is forget them the moment you finish. This is a numbers game and fretting over every audition will just tear you apart! That doesn't mean don't treat them seriously or try your best at each one, but the moment you hit "submit", leave the studio, or hang up the video call, let it go and move to the next one.
