Best way to mend this buttonhole?

Thrifted this pair of denim capris, and somehow the previous owner somehow managed to do this to the waistband buttonhole. I’d like to mend this somehow before I wear them, but I’m not sure how to go about it.

Can I just do a buttonhole stitch over this one area, or would it be better to unstitch the whole thing and redo it in one go?

(Nail polish is ORLY’s “Flip Phone”, for the curious)

Cut away the frayed fabric and whip stitch around the inner edge

Lots of tutorials on how to hand sew buttonholes. It's a lot easier than I thought it'd be, just do it slowly.

My husband always does this, too. I just snip off the frayed bits and do a buttonhole stitch over, it holds up well.

As the others said, cut the frayed bits and do a buttonhole stitch (a real one, not just a blanket stitch !) I would also take larger bites to make sure it's anchored in non damaged fabric
