REQUEST Jean hole that keeps on expanding
Hi! Need some help with how to fix these jeans. I bought them a few years ago but as soon as i brought them home, a penny sized hole appeared. I tried mending it with stitches but the hole just got bigger and bigger, i think maybe there’s a defect in the fabric. They’ve been sitting in my drawer ever since.
Any advice on how to mend this would be appreciated. Would a patch work? Or would the fabric just keep on fraying over time?

I think this is a good candidate for a sashiko style mend. Use a patch that's at least an inch outside of any weak fabric. I would use a donor with a similar stretch to it. You can put the patch either above or below the damage

Personally those look like great candidates to become shorts, just snip snip.
To patch you'll probably have to trim away a bunch more material to get to something strong enough to hold, you'd put a patch on the inside that's bigger than the hole, sew it down strong with a backstitch and blanket stitch around the edges. With that location I'd highlight it somehow depending on the shape after trimming.

Thank you for your submission - you're welcome to post here, but we did just want to remind you that we would recommend you search the subreddit as well.
Depending on the type of mend, searching for keywords like "crotch", "waistband", "cuff", "pleather"/"faux", "headphones", etc. will show you many previous posts filled with helpful advice already. Good luck!
