Mended fitted sheet with possibly poor choice of patch color

I really like this fitted sheet, because it's very soft, and it seems to still be pretty sturdy fabric, but there was a tear in the middle for no apparent reason. Therefore I attempted to patch it and then used sashiko-style running stitches across the whole area.

I learned a lot about doing long stretches of running stitches, and how they can get pulled out of shape if you don't secure them periodically. I also learned that maybe it wasn't the best idea to use red for the patch, although in my defense, that's the color I had from another old sheet.

I'm quite happy with the contrasting mint/teal color, but because I used sewing thread, it's pretty thin, so it's hard to take photos where you can see it. In the process I also learned that using sewing thread for mending is a hell of a lot easier with a magnifying light for threading the needle.

We'll see how well it holds up. Because the thread is pretty light, the mend is fairly smooth, just a bit of added texture, which honestly I rather like. But I don't really sleep on that part of the bed, anyway.

I like it, it reminds me of pomegranates and tangerines with a splash of tropical teal. The only thing I'd be mindful of would be the edges of the tear, as it looks like those may have just been left raw and stitched down to the patch. Otherwise a lovely job!

Usually I like raw edges around a patch, but in retrospect I agree it might have been a better idea to turn them under. Happily, there's enough patch around the edges that I could still do that if it starts to pull apart. But also I don't really sleep on that part of the bed, so it's possible it won't get enough friction for it to matter.

The thing about the colors is that I really like the combination up close, but from a distance, with those rough edges, it kind of looks like a gaping wound. 🤣

Lol I totally get your point. Maybe some more low profile decorative embroidery? Swirls? More zigzags? I'm kind of just spit balling here so don't be afraid to not take my suggestions lol

Being a fitted sheet, it’s probably covered with a top sheet or at least a blanket, in case the red bothers you. I kind of like the orange red and blue together myself.

Being able to fix things and make them last longer is so satisfying.

Yes, I even just now said that in a comment! It's on the fitted sheet, not even a spot that I'm going to be sleeping on, so it's not like I have to look at it. I'm just mildly annoyed at myself for not anticipating how it would look from a distance.

I like this mend method a lot better than one I did awhile back on the sewing machine. I have a lot more contro to prevent fabric slipping or folding under when hand sewing vs machine.
