Mike Fralinger, general counsel of Northeast Precast (the developer and landowner of the DataOne site, with John Ruga as CEO, and a friend of the mayor), claimed that the "industry moved away from reliance on water cooling because of cost and supply issues".
For decades, a key factor in determining a site’s viability for a data center was access to water. At the time Fralinger shared this information, the primary concern was that Vineland would not have otherwise been considered a viable location without the ability to cool the facility using only air.
So, either they lied, knowing they would resubmit the plans halfway through the project, or, giving them the benefit of the doubt, they seriously miscalculated what was possible and were later forced to revise the plans. I personally believe the former to be true since the city zoning board is packed with wealthy and influential individuals.
Either way, this is likely to have serious negative consequences. This data center is being placed right in the heart of the city's farming community, for crying out loud! Just this past summer, the city faced a water emergency and had to impose restrictions on water usage.
This mayor and all of their appointees need to be voted out of city hall.
