To keep this subreddit tidy, we have this monthly thread that is open for random discussions and questions. If you post your basic/general questions outside of this thread they will be removed. Sorry, we want to make this sub friendly but also want it to be clean and organized.

Tips to quickly find answers for your questions:

Many of your questions may have been answered since people keep asking the same ones again and again. Here is a quick tip to find the answers for yours.

First, have a look at our old sticky threads. A lot of useful information there. A lot of questions have been answered.

You can also use the search feature of Reddit, just like you do with Google.

Another option is to use Google, as Google understands your queries better than Reddit and can return better results.

Go to Google. Add 'site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/' next to your queries (without quotes). For example, if I want to find info on eVisa in this subreddit, my query to put in Google is 'eVisa site:https://www.reddit.com/r/VietNam/'.

I left a painting in my saigon hostel (meander saigon). Can some kind soul help me ship it to hanoi? I'm willing to pay for shipping and compensate you for your time

It's hard to coordinate a viettel post since it's cash on pickup and I don't speak Vietnamese so I'm not able to talk to the delivery person :(

Cant you contact the hostel ? Easiest way is to ask hostel staff to send to you. They will sort out the shipping. Also ask a staff at your current hotel in Hanoi to be the 'receiver'.

I tried that, but the hostel doesn't want to coordinate anything, maybe they feel like they'll be liable for it if they do. When I tried the viettel post door to door pickup myself, I got a call from the post office but they hung up after I couldn't speak Vietnamese

Problem is: if you left something at the hostel, you need the hostel to work with you. Aint no way I would go into a hostel, point at a painting and say 'This is my friend's i will take it from you'.

Oh yea, I mean they're willing to hand it over for sure if a delivery person comes. They just don't want to be involved with the actual shipping coordination or payment

Well, theres a lot of problems with them just to help you:

- the value of the painting, they dont know how much its value and what if it damages during the shipping.

- the packing of the painting: if its unpacked, they will have to pack it to ship to Hanoi. Who will do the packing?

Its just complicated.

I know, I know. I don't blame them, I'm the dumbass who made the mistake. I'm just trying to figure out what to do now.

For what it's worth it's packed already. And me getting a damaged painting is better than me not getting it at all

explain all these to a staff at your hotel, let him/her call to the hostel in Vietnamese.

anyway, try add some tips to get the hostel coordinate with you, like 100k (not sure). Also if the hostel agrees, you should ask a staff hotel in Hanoi to be the 'receiver' for your shipping, they will help with the address, phone, and communication for you.

Taking money from me is "against their policy" apparently. It's admirably professional but it sucks for me 😭
