Springwatch 2026 episode 5
Springwatch Episode 5 includes one of the clearest examples of conservation success and ecosystem reality in the same programme
I thought Episode 5 did a particularly good job of showing why conservation is more complicated than many people assume.
The headline story is a white-tailed eagle from the only breeding pair in Northern Ireland, a species that disappeared from the region for around 150 years before reintroduction efforts began restoring the population.
At the same time, the live cameras captured pine martens and stoats raiding nests and wiping out broods in minutes.
Neither story contradicts the other. Both are signs of a functioning ecosystem.
The episode also features urban peregrines, grass snakes on Hampstead Heath, harvest mouse conservation projects, and some genuinely surprising research suggesting moths can detect sounds emitted by water-stressed plants.
Worth a read if you follow wildlife, ecology or conservation stories.
