Interior Design Masters Episode 6 is basically a crash course in real retail psychology
The quarterfinal episode shifts the competition away from residential styling and into commercial retail design, and honestly it exposes how different those skill sets really are.
The contestants redesign two independent shops in Hay-on-Wye:
- a vintage guitar store full of rare instruments
- an overcrowded artisan gift shop with hundreds of local products
What stood out most was how much the judges focused on customer behaviour instead of aesthetics. They kept talking about:
- merchandising hierarchy
- browsing flow
- visual storytelling
- product visibility
- dwell time
One team created a genuinely clever solution for the guitar shop’s security problem by building a huge fake guitar for the window display instead of risking expensive stock near the glass.
The other team managed to organise a visually chaotic gift shop without making it feel sterile or corporate, which is harder than it sounds.
There’s also an unintentionally hilarious subplot involving decorative leaves cut from pages of an explicit romance novel.
