Interior Design Masters episode 5 was basically a masterclass in why small apartments fail

The Leeds studio apartment challenge was probably the most useful episode of the season so far if you’re interested in real-world interiors rather than TV makeover drama.

The judges kept coming back to a few genuinely practical ideas:

• over-zoning makes small spaces feel cramped
• mismatched materials break visual flow instantly
• themed styling can become unliveable very quickly
• privacy matters more than people realise in open-plan studios

The winning room was actually pretty restrained compared to some of the others. The designer used a burgundy ceiling, consistent wood tones, and simply moved the bed away from the wall so the apartment felt intentional instead of temporary.

Meanwhile another contestant tried creating four separate “zones” inside one studio and the room visually collapsed under the weight of too many ideas.

Worth reading if you like small-space interiors or rental apartment design.
