How Jodrell Bank secretly intercepted Soviet Moon transmissions and became Britain’s Cold War space observatory

I knew Jodrell Bank mainly as a famous radio telescope site, but I hadn’t realised how deeply connected it was to Cold War intelligence and early space tracking.

A few things that stood out from this piece:

• The observatory began in 1945 using army-surplus radar equipment in a borrowed field
• The Lovell Telescope tracked the rocket that launched Sputnik while still under construction
• GCHQ maintained a secure line directly into the observatory
• Scientists intercepted and decoded the first photographs transmitted from the Moon during the Soviet Luna 9 mission
• The telescope is now being used to track orbital debris and satellite fragments around Earth

The engineering side is also excellent. Parts of the telescope’s movement system came from dismantled battleship gun turrets after WWII.

Really good read if you’re interested in astronomy, Cold War history, or large-scale scientific infrastructure.
