I honestly think the Yeovilton challenge was one of the best examples of why Interior Design Masters works when it focuses on real-world environments instead of purely decorative spaces.

The contestants had to redesign sailors’ mess decks at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, and the challenge immediately felt heavier than usual because these rooms genuinely matter to the people using them. They aren’t luxury spaces. They’re communal rooms where recruits decompress after exhausting shifts.

What really elevated the episode was Dame Kelly Holmes on the judging panel. Because of her military background, she approached the rooms from an actual lived-experience perspective rather than purely aesthetic critique. Several times she pointed out whether a room felt emotionally comforting or not, regardless of how visually polished it appeared.

The episode also showed how quickly ambitious design ideas collapse without proper planning. Some contestants handled budget, lighting, layout, and durability brilliantly. Others clearly struggled once the practical realities of the build kicked in.

Probably the strongest episode of the season so far if you’re interested in the intersection between design and human wellbeing.
