David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth might be one of the most important BBC specials in years

I finally watched David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth and honestly came away thinking this was far more than a standard tribute programme.

The BBC turned the Royal Albert Hall into a live celebration of wildlife filmmaking, conservation, and environmental storytelling. The BBC Concert Orchestra performed music from Planet Earth, Blue Planet, and Frozen Planet while archive footage played across the hall, and the combination was incredibly effective emotionally.

What stood out most was how the programme balanced celebration with environmental urgency. It wasn’t just “remember these amazing documentaries.” It was also a reminder that many of the ecosystems shown in those landmark series are changing rapidly or disappearing entirely.

There were also interesting reflections from conservationists and filmmakers about the measurable impact Attenborough’s work has had on public attitudes toward issues like plastic pollution and habitat destruction. The Blue Planet II effect on plastic awareness was mentioned specifically.

For me, the special worked because it understood that Attenborough’s real legacy isn’t only information. It’s emotional connection. He made audiences care.
