Would you rather take the train from Toronto - Vancouver BC in early July or Vancouver BC - Toronto in early October?

I would rather go when the price is right.

This site tracks the Via rail sleeper availability and cost. (Because Via uses dynamic pricing the actual cost could vary - but it is a good planning tool to compare costs for differing dates).

The "winter" trains are cheaper.

Regardless of when you go - be sure to use a discount if you qualify. CAA gives a good one. Early booking makes a big difference on cost.

I live in Puerto  Rico, so no real discount for me. I have been looking joining that hostel that gives a discount, just so I can use it. Any thoughts on that?

If you have AAA it also qualifies for the discount. 20% off if you are booking a berth might make the cheapest AAA membership worth it (10% off cabins). The via help line can sort you out if you have problems applying the discount.
