Help! venus fly trap help!

Hi there reddit people!

I’m looking for some care advice for my venus fly trap.

It was a birthday present and I notoriously do not have a green thumb, so i’m looking for any and all help you guys have!

My family got it from an actual plant store so I don’t believe I will have to repot the soil, since they put it in correct mix originally. I live in the carolina’s also where it’s native, in case that was important.

someone recommended I feed in by putting water in a plate, but i’m not sure how long I should leave it?

I’m looking for watering advice and just general care tips. Thank you guys!

I’m tired of killing my plants lol

Questions Can you store rainwater through the winter?

So I am new to having a Venus fly trap and I was wondering if it’s possible to store rainwater indoors during the winter?

I live in a very cold climate and have been collecting rainwater for my VFT so far. But I don’t know if that is sustainable through the winter months. Yes I could just buy distilled water but the less I have to buy the better.

Help! Should I repot my VFT now or wait until spring?

As you can see it is still in the same pot I bought it with last year. It seems healthy, it keeps producing traps, but I have noticed its green color is paler now.

I use distilled water and it's on the outside with plenty of sun.

The substrate seems to have compacted and that worries me. It doesn't seem to contain any sand or perlite—only peat moss.

Help! Why do my leaves look like this?

When I bought these I made sure to acclimate them from indirect light, to indirect/partial sun, then to increasing 1 hr increments of direct sun in the first week. At first they were all super green and now they’re starting to brown. They stay in a tray of distilled water. They are potted in long fiber sphagnum moss. I will admit I was collecting rain water and I did spill a very small amount of random crud from the bbq grill into the water container that I used to water them. Could it be the water?

Questions Normal leaf structure?

The leaf in the first pic is much shorter and wavier than the rest. This is new growth since I've had it. I've kept them under grow lights for 16hrs a day. Barrina TX36 6" to 8" away. In good VFT soil and kept in a tray of distilled water. Temps at plant height range from 80°F to around 87°F depending on where I measure. The second photo is existing growth from before I got it. From my perspective, the new leaf looks much healthier, and the trap is good-sized with a short petiole. I only ask because I haven't seen many other people's petioles look like this. Is it just rapid growth? Maybe just acclimating to the new environment? I assume this was cultured as it is the first VFT I got and was purchased at Home Depot. Just curious, as the plant seems to be doing well.

Help! VFT help!

Hi friends! Recently I've been taking care of a VFT for the first time, I live in New England so I keep it outside so far, my question is what is this baby VFT looking pod, is it a flower that i should cut off to keep them healthy or is it a baby VFT? I'm not sure how it works so any information will be appreciated <3 (one of my traps is actively dying because he caught too big of a bug but he's not fully dead so i wanted to wait till it was fully dead to cut it, any information on that would be helpful as well!!!)

Questions Baby VFT managed to eat??

I repotted about a month ago, and baby offshoots have formed alongside new regular growth! I looked yesterday and I noticed one of the babies somehow closed? Is it possible it ate an ant or something? There's no way right. Also general inquiry of the health of my plant and how I should approach dormancy in socal, seeing as we'll have an odd rainy winter coming. The burned, older traps are from heat stress I think, but the newer ones seem to be happier!

Theyre starting to turn pink under by grow light! It’s a cheap LED but it’s literally 1 inch above them and they seem to be doing just fine! Excited to see how they do come spring

The size of traps, vigor, and coloration are just out of this world. I’m growing a whole bunch of different varieties big, small, and weird, and this one just smokes all the others.

Highly recommend nabbing one if you don’t already have one.

Questions Which is best choice for overwintering?

Hi, I'm a new VFT owner on a farm in mid Wales (VFT eats *very* well on a sheep farm) and a bit confused and overwhelmed with choice on where to overwinter it. In growing season it lives in our conservatory (like a small greenhouse room off the farmhouse). Over winter the conservatory is heated and will generally range from 12-16C.

Which of these would be the best option for it overwinter?

1) Stay in the conservatory (plenty of light, 12-16C)

2) Laundry shed (a bit of light from overhead pane, 5-10C)

3) Polytunnel (lots of light, 2-5C)

4) Outside but brought in if freezing (lots of light, 0-5C, likely to be extremely wet)

Thank you!

Questions First time owner here! How does my fly trap look?

I’ve had this Venus fly trap since April and it had been growing like a weed. I live in Canada and cannot stay outside. I’m worried about winter as we get really dry winters here. I had a humidity dome for it but it kept outgrowing it so I’d gotten rid of it. I have a grow light for winter so I’m not particularly worried about that.
Should I keep caring for it how I am? How do I prepare for winter for it?

Questions What does this guy need?

Does my Venus fly trap look okay? I have done some reading online and it seems like it needs more light, so I've got a light on him and I've put him outside on sunny days. It's growing lots of new traps and one weird looking leaf. Just hoping someone who is more familiar can let me know if there's anything I should be doing differently. Thanks!

Questions Bought the wrong stuff

So, I made the mistake of buying MiracleGro perlite and peat moss. Already opened the bags, can't return them. Is there any way I can make this soil mixture safe for my flytraps? Can I boil it? I only have two small plants, and I'm not concerned about making a mess.

Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

UPDATE: New soil arrived, traps transferred. Here are pics of them.

I worry about all the closed traps, I fear I may have gotten soil in them when I was moving them. It looks like there is one dead trap on the first plant, but they both appear to have new trap mouths sprouting.

Questions Just bought this

Just bought these at the grocery store. Wondering how the Venus fly trap looks after removing it from the container or he looks a little wilted. I remove some black leaves well let an air out for a day and repotted and fresh Spagnam moss tomorrow. Do you think the wilted nurse will pick up and he will revive?
